This series is really something special and this entry retains the high level of quality that I've come to expect having played all previous entries. That said, like was true for LBP2, the story mode here takes too long to get interesting (much of the first half seems like "learn the mechanic" training), but the intensity and sheer joy of the last few levels makes the effort worth it. I have yet to dive into the mini-games and user-created stuff (I intend to), but I'd probably rate this as just about on par with the well-regarded LBP2 on the PS3.

Also, my tenth Vita game of the year
What do you think of the Vita's library, what would you say are the best games and how good are those best games respectively?

I think it is a very solid handheld library, one that I am increasingly purchasing digital content for and that has not for one minute been a regrettable purchase.

The standalone Vita titles are, for the most part, very faithful renditions of top-tier PS3 fare. Some people don't like handhelds that reproduce a console experience - I do. I'd say that the best platform-specific titles are stuff like Wipeout, Lumines: ES, and Little Big Planet. That said, I've had a LOT of fun with the system in playing cross-play titles - Sound Shapes is my favorite platformer in years, Pinball Arcade has sucked hours of my life, and stuff like PS All-Stars and BlazBlue - games which have unique Vita ports but offer cross-platform experiences, are excellent in their own right.

16. Black Mesa (PC)
17. Dear Esther (PC)
18. Splatterhouse (PS3)
19. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)

Well, finally, another SNES RPG done. I started this game about 15 years ago and never finished it, so I'm glad to finally sit down and knock it out. It's not a bad game, though it's very easy. Maybe not to the point of Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (though I'd argue that status effects made that game more difficult then the ones in SMRPG), but still in comparison to other SNES RPGs, it just feels like it's short, sweet, and generally simple.

So I suppose for the fans, I should say: Final Party was Mario, Bowser, and Geno. Mario had both Lazy Shells and the Quartz Gem, Bowser had the Drill Claw, Work Pants, and Troopa Pin, and Geno had the Star Gun, Hero Cape, and Safety Ring. Final levels were all in the upper 20s.

Now I think I'm going to go back to First Person Shooters for a game or two, though I gotta admit that I like finally sitting down with RPGs again after not having done so in a long time.

Hotline Miami (10/24) PC
Hard Reset: Extended Edition (11/20) PC

Hard Reset is a difficult, but fun FPS with a bit of a different flavor from other games in the genre. What sets it apart from the modern FPS is that you move very quickly, like you did back in the DOOM days. What sets it apart from DOOM is that the game is not about big labyrinthine levels to explore and get lost in, instead it is a sequence of set pieces that have various dangerous environmental elements that can be used to your advantage or to your demise.

The weapons in this game have a wide range of abilities that give them different tactical advantages in various situations. The level design forces you to get accustomed to different guns because you need their unique abilities to move forward. For example, it's really difficult to use explosives without killing yourself on a group of enemies that charge you or inside a corridor. Enemies that fly are almost impossible to kill without a targeting system. Hordes of enemies are more easily taken out by streams of electricity with a wide spread rather than streams of bullets.

Downsides to the game are that the story feels kind of tacked on as it is told through comic strips and mediocre voice acting between levels. Though the graphics are beautiful, they are also consistently blue throughout the original game. It's a good look, but it all starts to feel the same soon. This extended edition includes DLC that adds five new missions to the end of the game, which have green, yellow, and red hued levels in addition to the blue ones. This cuts down on the monotony and makes the game world feel bigger and more alive. I am also not convinced that such detailed graphics are the best choice for such a fast paced shooter. While I love the graphics, you move so fast it's hard to pay attention to them and the detail actually gets a little bit in the way of the action until you get accustomed to it. It does make for some lovely screenshots though.

Every bit of progress you make in this game is hard fought. I must have died a hundred times (I beat the game on normal difficulty). Though the difficulty is usually enjoyable, I almost quit the game a few times when I was really stuck, but ultimately I'm glad I stuck it out until the end. As you retry and retry, you start to see how you could use the environment to your advantage, and you come up with strategies for how to cycle through weapons to give yourself an edge. There are also several boss battles that were all really cool, especially the final boss battle. The bosses are all huge and require unique strategies to beat. All-in-all, I rather liked this game. I give it 4/5 stars. :)

I really enjoyed this one in the beginning, and thought it could be the best of the series. Unfortunately that didn't hold true, and it became a chore to finish. There are definitely great things about this game, but there are also a lot of fundamental things that were done poorly.

The Good:
- Naval battles, graphics, character animations, naval battles, facial animations, sound effects, soundtrack, naval battles and naval battles.
- I also really enjoyed building up the homestead.
- The ongoing AC story is something I've always liked as well, and this wasn't an exception.
- They also did a great job with the wilderness and running through trees.

The Bad:
- Simplified controls meant more free running mistakes.
- Simplified combat meant easy, uninteresting fights.
- Extremely boring story missions that constantly devolved into either a chase sequence, follow sequence (that you failed if you were spotted), or a stealth mission (that you also failed if you were spotted)
- An unhealthy glut of side quests that seemed to be of no benefit
- Completely pointless side objectives during missions (don't shove anyone during a chase mission? really?)
- A convoluted, clunky and overall cumbersome crafting mechanic that you had to use to acquire most of your equipment upgrades (very few items were for purchase in stores)

Anyway, that's enough complaining from me. I really wanted to like it, but the truth is if this weren't an Assassin's Creed game I wouldn't have finished it, and I will be wary of future entries.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was anothe rsolid entry in the series. I didn't like it as much as the GBA ones though. One reason for this was the huge maps with spread out enemies this game has - making mounted units generally superior to those on foot simply because they can get to enemies faster and gain exp quicker. Mages, on the other hand were fairly useless due to low speed, movement and defence compared to other games. The story was ok, but felt incomplete (and, of course, is - the rest of it is in Radiant Dawn on Wii). The Bonus experience mechanic is nice, but the new method for supports I didnt like, as it forces you to use certain characters basically every map to get it. Overall, I liked this one, but it's not a patch of Fire Emblem (7) on GBA in my eyes.

Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask is more of the same generally, but I never consider that a bad thing. There were far less annoying block puzzles in this one, and the story, while very predictable in some ways, still managed to throw enough of a twist at the end to surprise me. The graphics are very nice, and the 3D character models look good, even if they take a little getting used to. I liked that we got to see some of Layton's past, even if I found his friend Randall to be frankly quite annoying. Anothe great entry in the franchise, not as good as Lost Future perhaps, but better than the previous Spectre's Call. The little cutscene after the credits hints at a pretty epic and crazy finale for this prequel trilogy with lots of surprises. I can't wait! I'll be sad to see the series end.

Super Crate Box is a really fun little single screen platformer/shooter that has a few levels and other numerous goodies and perks to unlock. I think most people here would dig it, as it has a classic arcade feel.

SFXT was on sale for $1.00 the other day, so I picked it up and promptly 1cc'ed arcade mode. It works well enough for a touch-control based fighter, but it doesn't really stack up very well to the actual game and is hardly a replacement.
