Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Style can be part of it. For example, the bright, cartoony style of many first party games almost inherently worked around the N64's low amount of texture memory by being able to utilize Gouraud shading effectively to pull off their look.
Personally though, I would tend to take what's on display with mini games and like with a grain of salt. The system has a lot less to manage with the relatively small environments and simple/nonexistent AI, and may be able to push detail or filters that become difficult to maintain with "full" games. In effect, they can create playable tech demos that rightfully should look really nice...but may not be something the system can actually do on a larger scale. There's a reason nearly every 1080p native game on the PS3 is a PSN title.

I think to say the Wii U launch games, made specifically for the Wii U do not look better than old offerings is simply not true. Does it blow one out of the water? No. Is it better, yes. We are quickly reaching a pinnacle of graphical capabilities here. We are in the land of very diminishing returns. The costs associated with creating marginally better looking graphics are exponentially higher.
It seems some of us are getting stuck in the numbers game. A measure that since time immemorial has proven to be a questionable way to measure a system. Most offerings are not 1080p anyway, and the old consoles, contrary to popular belief did not start out with 720p offerings. They were more in the 500p league, closer to the Wii's 480p. Things will get better.
For those so insistent on 1080p graphics, make sure your viewing distance is close enough so that your eye can even resolve 1080p (guess what most don't). With a 50in 16:9 TV you can sit a maximum of 6.5 feet away from the TV and still be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. Any further and you cannot tell the difference.

Use the calc, and figure out if your setup is even correct first.

Why do people keeping floating this idea that we've reached some graphical pinnacle? Have they not seen Unreal Engine 4 tech demos? Have they not played PC games for the past few years? Do our games look as good as even Toy Story 1, let alone Wreck-it-Ralph? There's lots of room to improve, lots of new innovations to further push immersion, wonder, realism, etc.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
How does everyone feel about the battery life on the pad? I had it fully charged before I started playing on Sunday morning, I got the low battery signal about 3 hours into playing Zombi U. Put it on the charger for an hour or 2 and it displayed full again. While playing Nintendo Land with a bunch of people we got the signal again, and had to plug it in while we played, which meant getting out a light duty extension cord to reach all the way across the couch.

I believe it, good on them for doing a little bundle deal and still having stock. Definitely not as scarce as the original Wii launch. Shame Amazon isn't in the game here.s1mplehumar wrote:Ahhhh. I turned the brightness to the lowest and turned off rumble. I think I got about 5.5 hours out of it. Not great, but liveable.
Older. Not wiser.
