the one thing that really bothered me about Deluxe is that the screen scrolls up and down. That really threw me off. I'm surprised it wasn't even mentioned in the review, as that factor makes it feel like a pretty different game from the NES original.

That is a good point, but personally I thought nothing of it. I guess that just depends on the player.

I liked the DX version more because of the save function, the Lost Levels, and the proper addition of Luigi.

Man, I loved this game. It is my favorite Gameboy game easily. I remember the first time I played Lost Levels (I didn't know about it since I had not owned an SNES to play Super Mario All Stars) and it used to whoop my ass.

I'm not sure what you mean by the screen scrolling up and down.

from Wiki:

since the screen resolution of the Game Boy Color was smaller than the NES, the view distance of the player is reduced. To compensate, players can press up and down to see above and below the player. Pressing select during the game also places the player in the middle or off to the left of the screen so that player can see well.
