I'm sure you could find one on launch day if you really try. I saw plenty of Wiis on launch day to be had if I wanted and that was supposedly pretty scarce. Now a couple of days out, you were definitely screwed.

Interesting article from Tom's Hardware stating that you only have 3GB free space on the basic Wii unit.

The amount of usable storage space available on the Wii U is hardly sufficient.
The Wii U internal storage options aren't exactly its strong points: the Basic and Deluxe editions only hold 8 GB and 32 GB respectively.
Unfortunately, these figures don't account for the preloaded data that ships with the system. After formatting, the Basic Edition actually only has 7.2 GB of data available for use, with 4.2 GB used up by preloaded software, leaving only 3 GB available for downloadable games and save files. According to Ars Technica, 3 GB isn't enough for an install of NintendoLand, which is 3.2 GB.
In the case of the Deluxe Edition, formatting leaves only 29 GB available for use. After accounting for the 4.2 GB used up, the Deluxe Edition actually only has 25 GB of storage available for use, which is still a paltry amount for AAA game installs.
Thankfully, the Wii U allows for SD cards and USB hard drives of up to 2 TB to be used to expand storage. Unless you'll be satisfied with playing only smaller games or repeatedly deleting games off of your Wii U's hard drive, it looks like this storage expansion option is a must.
Yes, you can connect an external hard drive to the WiiU, but you can't play games off of it; you need to keep transferring stuff on and off of the system memory from the drive. Also, the drive needs to be reformatted to the WiiU's filesystem structure, and thus cannot be used for anything else.

This is similar to what was done for the Wii, right? Games that can't fit into the system memory can be transferred to the SD card. When you play it, the Wii temporarily copies it into system memory before running it?

I've not seen anything confirming this, where did you hear that? I've heard about the drive needing formatted to the wiiU structure, but nothing about not being able to play games directly from it.
You can play games off the drive but it does need to be formatted.
Also I am very surprised how much Nintendo has dropped the ball on this. I was sure they would start selling bundles with special Nintendo hard drives, like buy ZombiU for 80$ and get yourself a 20GB harddrive included.
Similar to what Square Enix did with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2, when they bundled that with a hard drive. Why is Nintendo letting other companies profit when they could sell their own?

Because this is just how Nintendo operates. They wont be making their own headsets for online play either, for example.
Nintendo doesn't want to put forth effort in areas that they don't see as worthwhile. The only stuff you need to be downloading is old ROMs packaged with an emulator, and console voice chat is something that never should have been invented.
