NSMB2 - Verdict?

Post by marlowe221 »

Well, I went 6 pages deep on this forum looking for a thread on this game before I made one myself so.... be nice if there is, in fact, one around somewhere!

It took me a while to get over the fact that this game was NOT going to be a spiritual successor to SMB2 USA (love that game). Now that the tears have mostly dried over that issue, I am thinking about picking it up.

I have read some reviews but I trust you guys more than IGN and Gamespot.

So - great game or pointless rehash?
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Can it be both? It's pretty much the same as the first 2, only you get way more extra lives (as if it mattered). It's all the same stuff, it's getting a bit stale, but it's still an enjoyable, quality game.

Wouldn't be my first choice for a 3DS title, but an ok option if you have some of the other, better titles for the system. If you want Mario and don't already own it, get Super Mario 3D Land first.

See, that's the thing - I DO own SMB3DL.

I have to make myself play it. I recognize that it is a good game but I have basically no motivation to play the thing.

I want to like the game more than I actually do like it. I guess I was thinking that a straight up 2D platformer might be more motivating for an old timer like me (I'm 30...). For example, despite seeing a lot of people bitch and moan about the demo for Epic Mickey Power of Illusion, I really liked it and I am considering beating back crowds of Wii U buyers on release day so I can pick it up.

Its comfort food.

I practically beat it already. All I have to do is get the star world unlocked.

The game is not hard at all. There are a few places that made you think for a second. But once you figured it out, its cake.

The game became even easier with the addition of the GOLDEN RACOON MARIO. You die enough times and you unlock this almost invincible mario.

But having this ability stops you from getting that last final big coin. Since you automatically kill the enemy you can no longer jump off of it to get higher or the big coin.

I guess this would make it so that even the youngest player wont get frustrated with mario.

One thing that seemed weird/different is your 3DS connected to the internet/street pass. You would get status updates and announcements from NINTENDO saying that worldwide players have reached XXX,XXX,XXX amount of coins. And as a gift all mushroom houses have returned. This would happen often in the first few weeks of playing. But Nothing at all in the last month or two. At least with me.

This may greatly affect you now?! I've wasted a couple of mini marios and gold fire flowers trying to get to a few certain hidden spots. They (mushroom houses) would come back with an update. But none lately. So If you've messed up a few times and no longer have any updates, its gotten really hard to get that power-up to fully complete that level. You'll have to backtrack and not get hit (as mini mario) to finally get that last secret.

As I think also, I dont have any other friends near me and I dont know what they got with the shared data. I've done a few coin rushes. But theres no point when there is no data to share with. I'm loney where I live and nothing has come up as I walk around with my 3ds on. Nothing. No shared accomplishments.

I also get some offers to buy more coin rushes from Nintendo, but I dont care for that. I havent bought anything from nintendo. And probably wont for a good while.

The game is a standard mario affair.

I rate it 8.25 out of 10
