Uncharted 3

Wow, really enjoyed this one. The Uncharted series is just so well made. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and has a fantastic storyline to boot. The graphics are definitely the best I've seen out of the aging hardware as well. Now I have to pick up 2 so I can have the entire trilogy under my belt. The controls frustrated me a little bit, as they did in the first game. Sometimes they just don't seem to respond properly. None of the Uncharted games are particularly open, but, I never really felt restricted either.

I may try out the online mode, but, online gameply on consoles usually just frustrates me unless it's a racing game or something that doesn't require precise aiming.

Hotel Dusk was a game I thoroughly enjoyed. It's not for everbody, it's very talky, and a lot of the gameplay revolves around talking to people to find out where to go next rather than solving lots of puzzles. That said, the puzzles in here are very inventive, and one in particular stood out to me as something a DS game has never asked me to do before (the puzzle where you turn the power back on). The way's these puzzle make use of the hardware is very reminiscent of Cings previous DS game Another Code/Trace Memory, and makes full use of the hardware in ways you might not expect. The atmosphere in this game is also pretty impressive, the art style is incredibly distinctive and stylish and reminds you of a hardboiled detective graphic novel. The rotoscoped characters were a good choice, look stylish and visually interesting, but being full of character and able to express lots of emotion as they talk. The music is perfectly fitting too. The story was injteresting enough to keep me playing, even if it wasn't anything mind blowing, and I'm certainly planning to pick up the sequel. Another great adventure game I've beaten this year.

Pokémon Puzzle Challenge I beat for Together Retro. It's fun enough, but thus far I agree with the opinions of several people there in that Puzzle League doesnt seems a bit too deliberate and a bit slow and doesnt catch me in the way my favourite puzzle games. Still, it's well made and enjoyable enough, and the Pokémon license has been added into this version in a way that is inoffensive, yet not a waste of the license either. I'll need to spend more time with this one before I really fully decide how I feel about it I think.

Monkey Island 2 was a good improvement on the first. It felt far more fleshed out and the world was more interesting. There were more puzzles and characters, and more to work on at one time. There were still some flaws - some of the puzzles were a bit too obscure in this one imo, and I had to use a guide at some key moments. The big world map came with the problem of there being too many places to go to find what you need to progress too - something I hate in adventure games. It's one thing being stuck on a puzzle, and another knowing what you need to do, but not being able to find the item that is necessary. The HD remake of this one was improved too, with nicer looking charaacter models (still slightly plasticy though) and smoother animation (still quite jerky too though). One BIG improvement for me was that you could keep the voice acting (which is excellent) on whilst playing in the old style graphics mode - a definite plus for those who arent keen on the HD style. The ending of the game was the weakest element this time - the final puzzle was an absolute git - a tough puzzle with constant annoying interference stopping you from being able to look around and figure stuff out. Then it's followed up by an ending I personally thought was bloody stupid. I won't spoil it here, but it's fairly well known, so perhaps you'll know what I'm talking about. It seems like a not very well though out twist, followed by a classic cop out ending. Not a fan. Overall I enjoyed both these first entries into Monkey Island, and will pick up Curse, Escape and Tales; but Day of the Tentacle is still king of LucasArts adventure games for me so far.

Next up: Something out of Fire Emblem 9, Animal Crossing Wii & Kirby's Block Ball.

Halo 4

I went in expecting to be disappointed since Bungie is no longer attached. Instead, I had a great experience. Very fun Halo entry. Still not as good as the first 2 on XBox, but better than ODST and Reach.

You can add my voice to the throng of folks praising Halo 4 as a near-high mark for the series. I thought it took a good while to get going, but the campaign really picks up after the first hour or so and delivers some truly stunning set pieces by the time it's over. It took me closer to 9 or 10 hours (on heroic) than the 5-6 that I've seen a few folks suggest - but maybe I just suck. In any case, that's two Halo games on my list for the year, both of which were excellent experiences that FPS fans should certainly check out.

Sonic Generations -11/12/2012

Halo 4 I had an extreme satisfaction with. Loving the story of this new trilogy so far, and will have to reread the books by Nylund, etc.

Sonic Generations was exactly what I was hoping for in this game. It was very well handled, and I'm pleased with how amazing the game plays. The soundtrack is incredible!

Ratchet and Clank (HD Collection)

Oddly enough, as a fan of the R and C series I've NEVER played the very first game in the series until now, thanks to the HD Collection on the PS3. I have to say, it has not aged well and its sequels have pretty much made it obsolete. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game and I was surprised to see many of the series' core elements already in place in its very first entry. However, there are so many things about it that annoyed me while I was playing, and much of that is due to my familiarity with the other games in the series.

For one thing, it feels very rough around the edges in many ways. Things you take for granted in later entries like having a good targeting system, an intuitive strafe feature, lots of checkpoints, much more readily available ammo on the field, and other things are not handled very well here. You don't even get a strafe feature until hours into the game and it's unintuitive and practically worthless. Also, there's some poor and rather uninspired level design in some places. Many gameplay elements that would be handled well in later games are done very poorly here. For example, there are sequences where you have don a disguise, done well in Tools of Destruction, but horribly here. They basically end up being really crappy stealth sections. Plus, there's an ACTUAL stealth section in the game as well involving avoidable searchlights. It's crap as well. The game also has HORRIBLE racing sections. I could have designed better racing levels in a drunken stupor than the garbage they have here.

The music in some parts of the game is really bad too, like the aforementioned race sections for example.

Also, the game is missing two of the things I love most about R and C games. There are no rpg elements and there's no combat arena. It does have a new game plus mode though, but it's not nearly as well done as in subsequent games. Kudos to them for having it in there though. They deserve credit for that.

Another big problem with the game is money is so goddamn hard to come buy, even in new game plus mode. This means you could end up grinding for hours just to buy that extra health upgrade or badass Rhyno weapon.

Boss fights are crap too in this game, every single one of them. There's not that many of them though

Lastly, the game just never feels like the badass action game that later entries would. Combat here is tame by comparison, and given the rather poor aim, targeting and strafing the game clearly would not be able to support more intense combat scenarios or a combat arena. The selection of weapons here also seems tame compared to later games. There's still some fun weapons to use, and the game is still notable for playing around with creative weapon types back when this was kind of a new thing, but it's just another thing that would get fleshed out much more and handled better in later games.

Bottom line, you can see much of the foundation for the series being laid here, but it's all unrefined and lacking. The series starts in earnest in its first sequel, Going Commando, which I'm going to be revisiting soon as I plan on finishing everything in this HD Collection and nab all those trophies!

It took 60 hours, but I beat Borderlands 2 ... mostly. Still have two circle of slaughter group of quests and the final (final) boss. Not to mention different characters and playthroughs.

This series is really something special and this entry retains the high level of quality that I've come to expect having played all previous entries. That said, like was true for LBP2, the story mode here takes too long to get interesting (much of the first half seems like "learn the mechanic" training), but the intensity and sheer joy of the last few levels makes the effort worth it. I have yet to dive into the mini-games and user-created stuff (I intend to), but I'd probably rate this as just about on par with the well-regarded LBP2 on the PS3.

Also, my tenth Vita game of the year :shock:
