The problem is that means developing a lot more film which is expensive. Instead of that, things will be done with digital video instead. Some low budget 'straight to video' movies are prime examples of this fake look, even when viewed in SD. Theaters wouldn't want to invest in new 60 FPS film projectors even if having to deal with more than double the bulk in film and reel changes were feasible for them. They'll stick to the existing 24, or switch to completely digital.
Its also a change in filmmaking. The cost of shooting at 60fps is more than 24fps by a fair amount.

The beauty of using a computer for video playback is that you can use custom renderers and calibrate everything to your fancy. Nowadays I mostly complain if they went cheap with an oldie transfer, but mostly I like the quality and wouldn't go back.

Yes. I just bought an HD TV and it took all of day to decide to take the thing back. Sure the HD channels look good, but the HD TV makes the standard channels look like a YouTube video from 1998. It did the same to my massive DVD and VHS collection which I'm not about to get rid of just because the TV dictates I should.

Everybody indeed needs to turn all of these "features" off. Sharpness is an evil thing. Turn it to off when watching anything hd. If you are watching a dvd or any sd stuff, put in a little sharpness. All of the other features should be turned off as well. And with most tv´s color on 50% is too much color. Try 45%. If you still do not like the HD look set up your blu ray device to output 480p. 24fps option is a huge improvement. dvd´s always have this weird shocking frame doubling effect to them. Goes for both ntsc and pal. ps3´s have amazing dvd/sd upscaling abilities. People need to experiment more. First turn everything off and then play with each option. You´ll see either no effect or smoothing effects. And sharpness destroys the pq. tv´s in shops always have these effects turned on. Before buying set everything to off with the remote. Just ask the sales people for the remote.

This article about Peter Jackson showing a clip of the Hobbit at 48fps is relevant: http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/ ... e-20120424

Personally I don't like the soap opera effect. You are supposed to lose yourself on film. I don't want realism from my movies. I get that every day in my life. I don't know why but tv and movie companies keep wanting to shove new tech down our throats to make a buck. I personally am not a fan of 3D either. Perhaps if higher fram rates are here to stay are good compromise would be to shoot films at a variable frame rate depending on what the scene calls for.

I still haven't watched a 3D film and never will, and 48p is one more reason to avoid cinemas altogether.. Not that Hollywood makes anything of interest these days.

Animated films such as CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, UP, and RISE OF THE GUARDIANS are wonderful in 3D. You should consider giving them a shot.

Fine, when them 3D glasses become redundant

Speaking of 3D, is the current BD spec capable of supporting 48 FPS and 3D?

The problem is people using the ugly 'vivid' setting on their TV along with 'motion flow', 'tru motion' or whatever that particular company calls their garbage. I hate it. One of my friends uses it and refuses to turn that junk off. Because of that, I hate when we use their TV for our weekly viewing of The Walking Dead. When we watch at other places the show looks great.

I should also note that every once in a while with that atrocious settings on I see a frame flash by the screen that looks completely out of place. So irritating. I don't understand the appeal of this rubbish.
