You know, I've never actually thought of following the companies that actually handle the restorations. That's a really great idea!

Aside from releasing movies that are generally a cut above in at least one way, Criterion Collection takes care in cleaning up the older stuff they release too. They've been doing it since the laser disc days. For example they released their Brazil DVD box set way back in 99 when DVDs were still fairly young. It has 3 discs: The butchered theatrical release, director's cut, and a disc crammed full of the now usual behind the scenes stuff as well as documentaries on the theatrical release mess. Many releases were still touting 'animated interactive menus' as a feature at the time as well.

It depends on your TV. Other than some cases of fake flickering transparency turning into window blinds or certain clashing colors next to each other on the NES, most old console stuff looks pretty good on mine.

I never found an option that specifically said it controlled the refresh rate. But buried two menus deep, I found one called Auto Motion Plus. Guessing this was related to the problem, I turned it off. Voila! The bad soap opera look was gone.

My main beef with the soap opera effect is that it isn't consistent. I could get used to it if the TV was able to maintain a consistently smooth framerate, but instead it is interspersed with judder, rendering it useless.

I'm waiting for theatrical releases to get over "ye olde 24fps cinema" and start filming in 60fps, so we can transition future releases to 1080p/60 and avoid all this post processing voodoo.

I'm waiting for theatrical releases to get over "ye olde 24fps cinema" and start filming in 60fps, so we can transition future releases to 1080p/60 and avoid all this post processing voodoo.

The problem is that means developing a lot more film which is expensive. Instead of that, things will be done with digital video instead. Some low budget 'straight to video' movies are prime examples of this fake look, even when viewed in SD. Theaters wouldn't want to invest in new 60 FPS film projectors even if having to deal with more than double the bulk in film and reel changes were feasible for them. They'll stick to the existing 24, or switch to completely digital.
