Re: Do you hate the way HD movies look?
This issue aside, I love HD gaming and tv/movies.
I would have a hard time going back to non HD.
Especially sports, it doesn't get much better than watching football on Sunday in HD with a big screen.

Separate from the 120hz thing I've noticed a handful of movies that just look bad on HD sets. Tron Legacy looks awful, its blatantly obvious whats a real set peice and what's cg, the whole movie looks like a bad play. It's even worse if the picture on the tv isn't adjusted well. Priest has the the opposite problem, most of the movie was green screened, and it shows, bad. It's odd to me for them too look so bad on bluray since both of them looked pretty nice in theaters, but whatever. Movies that just rely on good camera work look stunning. The Tree of Life is totally jaw dropping even on my entry level 32".

I watched the Tron Legacy BluRay, it looked pretty spectacular. The only stuff that bugged me was the young Jeff Bridges face. But the composite was generally pretty good.
I have a 42" Plasma, to note. Runs in 1080P@24 and all that jazz.
I actually remember that movie looking great, specifically the shots made for IMAX.

You'll probably be successful.

I love HD for sports and video games but I have to admit sometimes I feel kind of awkward watching movies in HD. I don't think it's because it's anything that's wrong with HD, it's just something my brain isn't used to.

Funny how some people don't want their movies to look like real life.Gunstar Green wrote:I love HD for sports and video games but I have to admit sometimes I feel kind of awkward watching movies in HD. Afteral, that's HD for you...
Only thing that looks meh is porn. Too many details...

Often those TVs are set into a special "display mode" for the store and won't let you change settings on them. You need to enter a special combination of button presses and whatnot to turn that off and put the tv back into "normal" mode. I had to do this when I bought my Samsung, as it was a display model. Good luck all the same.jay_red wrote:Next time I am at frys I am going to try and change the setting on a TV that has the "Soap Opera" look to see if all this time, it has been a stupid factory setting that has been keeping me away from hd.
Calibration really is important when it comes to picture quality. Too many people neglect it and wonder why stuff looks like crap.t0yrobo wrote:Separate from the 120hz thing I've noticed a handful of movies that just look bad on HD sets. The whole point me and others in this thread have been trying to make is that "this reason" is completely unrelated to HD as a format. It's a really crappy reason.J T wrote:I have never owned an HD TV for this reason. I still have a big CRT that I've used for years. I also don't play any consoles newer than a PS2, so I don't need HD for gaming either, other than my laptop.
I buy everything I can on Blu Ray. I totally love it. Only stuff I buy on DVD these days is stuff that's unlikely to ever get a blu ray release down the road. Mostly TV shows and cartoons and stuff.
Re: Do you hate the way HD movies look?
I am so glad that others noticed it. We talked about it recently with a colleague of mine.
The problem is, IMHO, that when everything looks clear, it is easier to notice the pitfalls of movies. It easier to recognize that you see a pre-set scene, or that the actors mimics are bad, or their moves are unnatural.
Some cartoons also have this bad effect, you see details what you should not have seen.
Sport on the other hand are much better this way, just like porn, you can see the juicy parts XD.
Acting in tv shows is often bad, and It is more difficult to notice that in SD. Fake computer effects are easier to catch on HD.
But there are truly some breathtaking moments in HD.

I've yet to see a movie where an effect or set looked fake in HD that didn't still look fake in SD anyway.feamatar wrote: The problem is, IMHO, that when everything looks clear, it is easier to notice the pitfalls of movies. How does acting look different depending on the resolution anyway?

I kinda like the smoothing.
