I found a sick looking Master system 2 on ebay from the UK for a great price... also have read online a bit that yes it is region free with UK/US games but not japanese. Can you use US accessories with a UK system?
Just wanted some thoughts.
Master System Region Free?
Re: Master System Region Free?
I don't see why not, but I can't confirm that. I know you can play PAL games on a US system, there's a little bit of lag but not enough to keep it from being enjoyable. I'm not sure if that's a problem the other way around.Icedawg wrote:I found a sick looking Master system 2 on ebay from the UK for a great price... also have read online a bit that yes it is region free with UK/US games but not japanese. I'm fairly sure that you can. I know I can play European games on my American Master System, the accessories shouldn't make a difference (MAYBE the 3D glasses?).
However, I'm pretty sure a European system will output PAL video, which would be a problem for hooking it up to an American NTSC TV, and there's a significant difference in voltage. I think getting an American SMS would be a much safer choice.

Most units of Master System 2 are RF only. You'd get a fuzzy picture (if your TV even supports PAL), on top of the usual PAL slower speed and borders. Not pretty.
But Sega was kind to leave features idle inside the hardware waiting for restoration.

If you have a Genesis, why don't you just get a Power Base System Converter?
Re: Master System Region Free?
I'm not looking to buy a Genesis at this time.... I'd love a Master System 2, had an original maybe a year or 2 ago. So hard to find one though. Thanks for the tips

I imported sonic 1 and 2 batman returns and jurassic park from the uk since they are so much cheaper than the us versions. They play just fine on a ntsc-u system and an ntsc crt tv, there are no region locks on master systems so feel free to import the games. I wouldnt reccommend the actual system being imported due to different power and video standards. Imo just get a model 1 master system its superior to the model 2 and a hell of alot cheaper and i think it looks more iconic.retrosportsgamer wrote:So can US Master Systems play any PAL release or only ones released in Europe?

Yes. At least for the one game that I have the domestic and import (because of different covers), the board and chip inside the cart is no different between them. Imports will work fine, just with any speed differences if they released in a 50 Hz country and playing them on our 60 Hz systems.retrosportsgamer wrote:So can US Master Systems play any PAL release or only ones released in Europe?
I've never met a pun I didn't like. - Stark
