Finally watched The Expendables II: ActionBoner The Movie

Ok, once again Luke was right. This movie is LEAGUES better than Expendables 1, and while I would love to give all credit to my Golden God, Dolph Lundgren, I wont. He was great, but so was EVERYONE ELSE in the movie. Even the Asian girl was great, though I'm bummed that Jet Li wasn't in it for very long. Schwarzenegger/Willis/Norris' glorified cameos were fantastic, and even the ultra-cheesy-on-purose-lines between them were magnificent. Norris' line about the cobra made me spit out my soda. Van Damme was actually pretty great as well. He could have used a bit more development as well as screen time, but he did do a great job. It was very entertaining.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

...but seriously. This movie sucked. I had pretty high hopes for it. But no. My wife adored the book, and also thought the movie was terrible. She said that the movie takes very little tone from the book. Like the book actually uses a lot of history to make you believe that Abe COULD HAVE REALLY BEEN a vampire hunter and it would make sense historically. But a lot of that was dropped for stupid shit like CGI horse-fighting. (Seriously... they fight on and with horses.) It's hilarious to say "a movie called Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter wasn't believable enough," but sadly that's what it felt like.

Finally saw Wreck it Ralph today

I don't think I can really add anymore to what's already been said about it. All I'll say is that it was cute, that I really enjoyed it, and thought it was well worth my time.

I wouldn't say it's much better than THE EXPENDABLES, but it is an improvement. The cameos actually weren't simply cameos. There were a few wasted scenes of banter, but overall it is "sex plane" good.

Thing is, noise mentions the book but his focus is on the source material and foundation of the original story. You can't argue that the movie didn't present it as well, mesh well, or...it doesn't do a lot of things well.

It is more than appropriate to consider other forms of media when it comes to books and movies, but you can't judge them on an apples to apples comparison. JAWS would contain at least an hour of hardcore sex if it followed the book*.

It's like Bay making the Ninja Turtles aliens...doesn't work.

My wife and I just finished up "The Unbearable Lightness of Being". Since we had both read - and discussed - the book, however, we knew everything that was going to happen during the movie and the meaning behind it. It kind of took the edge off what was otherwise a very fine movie.

We also just watched "Night Train to Munich" (1940), which was a great British, WWII-era, espionage film and a pseudo-sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's wonderful "The Lady Vanishes". While I am not sure that it surpasses Hitchcock's film, it was nevertheless very good in its own right, and I highly recommend it. (It is also available for streaming on Netflix if anyone is interested...)
