Looking for some RAM

Post by arnold_the_bartender »

As the title states, I need some help choosing some RAM. I'm building a high end PC and I'm looking for some RAM that will compliment my system. I'm looking for something that's high performance, something that I can add to later on in the future if need be (for example, I don't want to buy an 8GB kit that takes up a whole bunch of slots. This will prevent me from expanding in the future and would require me to buy a whole new kit. I'd rather build off of the existing one.) and won't cost me an arm and a leg (I can spare a few hundred). Should I even worry about low CAS latency and timing? I've been looking at numerous quad channel kits and I can't make up my mind. Here are some of the components that I have:

Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Extreme
Processor: Intel Core i7-3820 (temporary, will upgrade next year)
Graphics Card: Asus Radeon HD 7970 DC2
PSU: Rosewill Lightning 1300W Gaming Power Supply

If you click on the Specifications tab, you can see the features of the motherboard: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_ ... V_Extreme/

Asus has a qualified vendors list in a PDF file here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA ... AM-QVL.pdf

I've been bouncing back and forth between these two:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233345

If you have better suggestions, let me know! :)
What a maneuver!

If you get the 32gb set, you will need to replace all for to get a 64 gb set. You should get a set totaling 8-16 and splurge on a video card. What will you be using the pc for?

I wouldn't mind sticking with a 32GB set even if it uses all of the slots because I don't think it's even possible to use an overkill amount of 64GB (never say never but as far as today goes) and at 32GB I'll be permanently set (with more than enough headroom lol). I would go with either a 8x4GB 32GB set all at one time or get a 4x4GB 16GB set and worry about upgrading later if I need to (doubt it, but if I ever want to). I just don't want to deal with an 8GB kit because that's when I'll run into the problem of replacing an entire kit. I don't plan replacing this PC as it will last me a long time so I'm assuming memory requirements will change quite a bit during the course of this build.

I already spent a lot on the video card. I got a new HD7970DC2. Aside from gaming, I also plan to render stuff with video editing software among other things, but I'll be getting a 6-core Intel processor next year for that. I transfer and compress tons of files regularly among hard drives as well.

Here's are two kits by G.Skill:

Don't know why the second one is priced that much higher. Must be the lower latency and timing. I doubt anyone can even tell the difference.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I usually like to leave a sizable amount of programs running at times without having to close them. My current PC is one of those pre-manufactured HP Pavilions dated from around 2005. It's a piece of crap at this point but I threw put in a CM 500W PSU to replace the crappy 300W one that came with it so I could put in a Radeon HD 4650. I also changed my CPU from a single-core 2.4GHz Athlon 64 to a dual-core 2.4GHz Opteron. I also upgraded it from 1GB of RAM to 2GB quite some time ago. Best I can do on it is run Starcraft 2 on low/medium settings. Video editing is obviously horrendous.
What a maneuver!

The timings would probably be why, yes. If you see a difference outside of synthetic benchmarks, it'd be very minor.

Yeah. When I was researching info a lot of people were saying the same thing.

I'd recommend those. It's higher speed (1866) which is the fastest the board supports without overclocking. It's cheaper (by a lot) and you can buy as many as you want. Getting 32GB of that (which would only fill half that board, since it supports 8 slots!) would be about $160.

Never say never. Eventually the kernel will properly manage memory in Windows and you'll get a noticeable advantage in applications with 64GB. The advantage won't be whether or not it plays games x, y, or z better ... because it won't. Most games are currently capped at 4GB addressable space (they're 32-bit executable, after all) and the ones that aren't, likely get maxed out far before filling up even 8GB. The advantage is going to come from other programs running not being paged as often. So, you will be able to allow the computer to do more multitasking, which it already does, it will just be smoother.

But, I'd say go with these sticks, the timing is a little slower, but the frequency is much higher. And, it'd be like $320 to max out that board right now, so adding RAM every once in awhile would be perfectly doable.
I'd say start with two sticks giving you 16GB now, then go from there. It'll help keep the costs of the system down for initial building.

Also, for some reason on NewEgg ... buying individual sticks (multiples) is usually cheaper than buying kits ... even if it's the same sticks.

Thanks for the input. Looks like a very good way to start instead of buying a kit. Unless there are any more suggestions, I'll probably place an order for some of them tonight. Can't wait lol. The only other thing left is a boot drive and it will be ready to go.
