If you kill him fast enough, grab that gold and rush to the opposite side where a second orb will appear and drop a large chunk as well.

I don't know if it's a difference in the DC version compared to the PCB, but you can actually get four of these guys if you attack them all quickly enough. I generally get three.

So far I've hit about 3 billion on the beginning of stage 2 on the DC port. Not really much worth mentioning. I think I might have to play for fun also, because my score has been going backward from that after watching the technique video for stage 1. Not really sure what that person was doing on the boss that I wasn't to get 7 billion points on it alone.

You can get (4) of the orbs? I've only ever gotten (2) orbs and (4) midsize enemies center of screen. It is the same in both DC port and PCB. From what I can tell, both games are playing exactly the same save the numbers, the actual enemy presentation and bullet patters are the same.

Yep. If you break the the screen into four vertical quadrants, the orbs come down one in each quadrant from left to right if you kill them quickly enough. I don't think I've seen any super plays that actually bring them out, though, so maybe it's not really worth getting all of them.
You pretty much have to line yourself up right over top of them as they come down to kill them fast enough to get the next.

Yep, just got 3...literally have to get them in a row before they start firing. Got 3 orbs and 4 mid-screen mid-size enemies, had the chain up to +248 after the 4th mid-screen enemy.

I agree w/Jason, I seem to do better playing on a higher level - set it to level 8 for the heck of it and had my highest score yet, I suppose the entire game is madness after stage 2 anyways, so why not add more madness for more points on screen. The score i'll submit will be default settings, but I can see that adding difficulty would increase score.

EDIT:

Not my best score, but i'm just not doing any better right now, so need to get on the board:

That's a good point. I credit fed into Stage 4 and got obliterated. I'm going to start playing on CPS2 level 4 which is the Japan default. It's probably the same as the dreamcast arcade level 4.

Keeping a long chain going is most ideal for scoring but is also difficult. The next best thing is to discover spots to reflect large amounts of bullets back at a big enemy (or a bunch of smaller ones). Each bullet reflected back turns into a +1 exp.cube if it hits something. So you can get a quick +100 or so chain in the right places. (Another big difference MM has from GigaWing is the ability to aim reflected shots.) A good opportunity is the large tanks midway through stage 1. Another is at the end of the stage, just before the boss...the 2 rows of green planes. The shield is more than just defense...

Also the stage 1 boss, it's not really ideal to shoot him with your weaponry. There are many methods of fighting this boss, but the main similarity is destroying it with its own bullets and collect the gold. Your multiplier will thank you with a better score into the next stage(s).

I can chain stage 1 completely nearly half the time, but I don't worry about that in stage 2 on. I just try to create gobs of cubes in the right places, along with the other advice already mentioned...and while some runs are better than others, I'm still in the 10s of Billions [Mame]. (100+ on Dreamcast.)

So can anyone join in this club? Of course I had been playing the DC version a lot the past few months, but this is my first time with MAME though. Using this 1 button config has taken some getting used to after using the auto Pierce function in DC. But I like it, might keep using it whenever I go back to DC...
