The N64 stick uses optical sensors instead of variable resistors. You wouldn't be smearing grease near the code wheels and the sensors. Also the point is to just use a little bit where needed, not have it oozing everywhere. On joysticks and pads you'd only be using it on pivots. It should be safe on all plastic bits, but of course YMMV.
