Here's the breakdown, Dave:

It's an archaic way of transferring but it gets the job done.
Nintendo warns that once you transfer data off the Wii, it will be permanently deleted. It cannot be transferred back from your Wii U to your Wii. Essentially, by starting this process, you are formatting your Wii console.
Wow. Fuck that. Wii-U interest just got much lower.

Yeah, this decision is a huge blunder. :?

I don't mind losing the data from my Wii so much, but I worry about save games like Smash Bros Brawl which can't usually be transferred between consoles. If my wii gets formatted but Brawl doesn't transfer I'll be pretty peeved.

To be honest, I'd rather not lose my save data on my wii at all. I'm happy for my digital purchases to move, but I'd like to have saves on my actual Wii for Gamecube controller compatability.

That's the same thing they did for transfers from the DSi to the 3DS. Which is why I never moved anything off of my DSi.

Can't you transfer saves and digital games to an SD card before you do the transfer over to the WiiU, effectively being able to hold onto them? Even if not officially supported, I gather the home-brew community would have a way to get them off?

I've never really bothered with saves on the Wii and the VC.

You can with most, but a few can't be copied (Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Guitar Hero are some examples for me).

Now this might sound crazy, but couldn't you just keep using your Wii for Wii stuff?

I don't have much space at the minute, so I only take 2 or 3 home consoles around with me at any one time. Being able to use the Wii U for Wii games lets me bring another console along.

So yes I could, but I'd prefer not to.

this presents an interesting thing to me. If Nintendo wants us to transfer our VC games and stuff manually (instead of what I thought, re-downloading them) then I wonder what measures are even in place to stop me from transferring my pirated VC games? (Not that I have such things, but just in theory)

If there's no record of an eShop purchase, then you won't be able to transfer.
