What games offer up the cheapest deaths?

Post by Retrogamer0001 »

I've been playing Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 for a little while and JESUS.CHRIST. Some of the absolute cheapest and most annoying ways to die I've seen in a game. Most involve quick-time events like pushing L1+R1 to jump onto a ledge or avoid a falling object, but they happen so quickly and without warning that it's all but impossible to avoid dying the first time through. This is extremely annoying and pointless to me, as I don't think it adds anything but frustration to the game, and after you've died once, it's easy to avoid the next time around.

Aside from the obvious "cheap death" games like Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden on the NES, what other games go out of their way to piss you off in stupid ways?

I'm not specially good, so I haven't beaten stage 5 yet, but I see nothing cheap in Castlevania at all. The game is incredibly deliberate, you see everything coming from a mile away.

The chainsaw guys who saw off your head once they reach you in Re4 definitely add a lot of tension to the game. They spawn every two minutes or so in the minigame where you collect points to unlock new weapons. I'm not sure if they classify as cheap deaths though.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I was referring to being constant knocked back when you get hit by enemies only to fall into the nearest hole/pit and die. Same with Ninja Gaiden. Maybe it doesn't bother you so much, but that irritates the hell out of me too.

Metal slug... normally i use like 37 credits to finish a metal slug game (how the hell i'm gonna play the oXbox version that only gives you 4?!), you can dodge 1000 bullets but if you blink for one second on one of those later stages... YOU'RE GONNA DIE! Still love the game

btw i didn't find cheaps the QTE on RE4 the first time i played the game on the PS2... since they're so few and there's only two options i didn't have so much problem, wait until you play it in PRO you have to react twise as faster :P .

Yeah, Metal Slug games are classic quarter munchers.

MS3 on Xbox is virtually impossible. I've never made it past level 2.

Ghosts n' Goblins seems to have a bunch of cheap deaths. Enemies that rise from the ground...

I've never felt like Metal Slug is especially cheap, difficult as it may be. But anyone who can beat MS3 on oXbox is a machine. Even though you can start at any level you've reached, the final stage is just BRUTAL and is about as long as all the other stages combined.

I remember the original Final Fantasy having some seriously cheap enemies in it. For instance, you could have an encounter against a large group of cockatrices and even if you're strong enough to kill one in a single hit, you can still result in a group of enemies the same size as your party. The remaining might turn everyone in your party to stone, resulting in a game over. I also remember when I was just about back to an inn when I ran into enemies who kept putting my party to sleep. There was nothing I could do but slooooowly watch as everyone's HP got lower and lower, eventually dying.
I don't understand why so many folks have fond memories of that game!

Some people like a challenge. But others are just masochists.

I lost a continue in the boss battle in level 2 and send me back to the begining of the level... i said screw it and turn off the game

I will try the game again with a friend when we got free time. I know this game has some exclusive unlockable so i'm gonna get it!

I don't really remember it being that hard and I suck at games. haha I am kind of proud of the fact that it's one of the few RPGs I've actually finished, seeing as I'm not a big fan of them but I liked that one for whatever reason.
