The big question is, how will Nintendo do this with the Wii-U? I guess just not have these types of games for it? I feel like Nintendo may be failing before it starts. Similar to what happened with the Dreamcast. And we all know that if the Dreamcast had had a fighting chance, Sega might not have went under in the hardware market.
The WiiU uses blu-ray. However, Nintendo, just like with the Wii, is avoiding paying licensing fees so you wont be watching your movies on it.

I believe it supports USB hard drives as well?

You are correct sir, but even with blu-ray's massive storage, it's not without it's limitations.

Mainly, texture streaming and disc read speed. The PS3 initially had a 60gb hard drive for game installs, and that was way too small. They have 250 and 300gb drives now.

The largest the Wii-U can come with is 32gb of internal memory? If I bought Mass Effect 3 and GTA5, and it took up 15gb of that space already (just estimating and throwing out numbers here, but you get the idea) that is only 2 games.

Unless it's a 1st party Nintendo USB device, I doubt Nintendo will let us load games to our own USB devices for piracy reasons. I just think that Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot with this. They are trying to be a more "core gamer" centered company with the games, but if it misses GTA5, then WTF?

Sega didn't do enough research and launched the Dreamcast without DVD built in. That might have single handedly killed it when the PS2 came out. Nintendo might have screwed up in keeping the N64 cartridge based, they just barely squeaked that one out. I feel that only going with 32gb (on deluxe models anyway) is a mistake. The games are gonna suffer, and people will still be using the 360 and PS3 for their core machines.

sorry for the book, and the off topic stuff.

If Nintendo intends to take back market share and the "core" audience, I don't think they have much of a choice. But if the games end up being watered down versions (like the Wii would often get) then people still aren't gonna buy them.

I don't know why everyone likes to pretend there was any one single reason the Dreamcast died the way it did. The overwhelming Ps2 Hype, Sega trying to rebound off of the failure of the Saturn (in the US at least), rampant piracy, etc etc. The DVD thing might've been a factor as well, but I don't think there's any way you could say it 'single handedly' killed the system, as it's failure was the result of a number of combined factors. Besides, Gamecube and Xbox both did pretty okay considering neither of them played DVDs out of the box.

re-read what I wrote. I said "might have." Sure there were other reasons. You left out one important one, being that 3rd party publishers didn't want to get behind it due to the wasted time and effort with the Saturn. (some might argue that if not for this though, we wouldn't have had some awesome 2k sports titles)

As for the other consoles not playing DVD's, that's kind of null. The Xbox could, M$ just wanted more money for the option. And the Nintendo, well... I love the Gamecube personally, but I'm not sure how "well" it did.

What I'm saying is that M$ and for the most part Sony, seem to have the console thing figured out. Nintendo should, at the very least, copy what works well and go from there.

Don't forget that the PS3 was a first generation Blu Ray device. Disc read speeds are much higher now.

This is true. I don't think Nintendo would have gone for such small storage if they thought it wouldn't be enough for most people.

And the WiiU, does indeed support USB hard drives up to 3TB. Good to see another company taking the open approach.

excellent point on the blu-ray drive speed.

I was also not aware of that USB hard drive article. That does shed some interesting light on things now, doesn't it? It looks like I really did just spend $50 extra dollars for a black over a white colored Wii-U. LOL.

I still think GTA5 will be on at least 3 DVD's. Unless Rockstar compresses the textures to fit on DVD (like what was done with Final Fantasy). In the interest of keeping the game looking and playing as good as possible, I'd rather see more DVD's that can be installed, with a single play disc that doesn't have to be swapped.

You're also getting the pack in game, and a GamePad stand with the black one. Arguably worth the extra $50 before the extra memory factors in.

I think the USB support is partly necessary for Nintendo, as the Wii U is already selling at a loss. Expanding it to support HDDs, or including one, would only make it even moreso.

I guess I look at things differently for the DVD or Blu-ray debate. To me, there's a limit to the size of resources that the current consoles can work with. They haven't gotten a memory upgrade after all. A large world to roam around could still mean a lot of textures and such, but that could still be a standard few gigs of data on each disc paired with a set of more unique data for main story missions. That's how a lot of less linear games did it in the past if I recall, though of course they were more making room for FMV or tons of audio. I don't really see the driving around and needing to swap discs, though it might mean locking out more content based on story progress.

Regardless, a disc swap is preferable to what MGS4 did originally (changed installed content based on place in the game - took a lot longer than the 15 seconds a disc swap would have). I think they've since patched that out, but it was still amusing to see while they broke the fourth wall about how great Blu-ray was...
