But how much does an understanding of the electoral college really matter in the end?

It matters because our country is full of people like this:

One reason I don't vote is the electoral college. It sucks! It says my vote doesn't matter.

I live in Alabama, republicans win that state anyway. So casting a vote for Obama would be pointless and casting a vote for Romney is piling on. Please do away with the electoral college and I might vote.

I just think the person with the most votes should win, period. It's a simple concept. See Al Gore in 2000. The majority of American voters selected him as President yet he was not President.

Yeah seriously. If the only condition is that you win the popular vote, all you need is to win the urban centers of the United States and it's a done deal. The electoral college protects the interests of the United States as a whole. The agricultural centers of the United States should have a voice as well, despite their sparse population. The electoral college ensures there is a voice for those people too. Otherwise, given the current nature of urban centers, we'd have most cities electing democratic party candidates for the presidency for who knows how long.

There's a reason why it exists.
