The other day I got myself a Dreamcast, everything was fine I plugged it in and was away with no major issues and was a very happy man.
The next day I find that the Dreamcast isn't spinning the disks no matter what. Now this happened the first day once or twice, but was usually easily resolved by applying a little bit more pressure on the lid or just giving it a little tap.
Now I'm not sure if it is a tray issue as when I close the tray it says "reading disk" but then nothing happens. So does that mean that the Dreamcast knows the tray is closed and therefore is not a tray issue?
Now I've seen plenty of those videos where you take apart the Dreamcast and turn that particular screw slightly anti clockwise on the GD Rom drive, but reading some sites advice you not to do this. If anyone has any help it will be much appreciated as I am advised that this was the place to come for any issues. thanks.

Re: Dreamcast Won't Spin Disks
There's a switch so it knows if the lid is open. This is so it knows you've swapped discs for multi disc games and also to dump you back to the main menu if you're done with a game. If applying a little push to the lid sometimes helps, perhaps that switch is dirty.

Re: Dreamcast Won't Spin Disks
Remove the 4 screws and take off the lid. Search for the little black lever that tells the console it's closed. Push it back and hold it like that while booting a game. If the game boots fine, then chances are the lid doesn't push the lever back far enough. Just put some tape around the lever to make it thicker so it pushes back a little more...

im not sure how the Lid Switch solder points are but you could try and reflow the solder if all fails.

Those solder points are good. No need to reflow nothing. Trust me...s8n wrote:im not sure how the Lid Switch solder points are but you could try and reflow the solder if all fails.

But the issue the OP is an incredibly easy fix. About a month ago I bought a "defective" DC basically for part as the disc drive would not spin discs. By accident I noticed that if I pushed down slightly on the tray door the disc would begin to spin. It instantly occured to me that perhaps the lever needed some more give or contact with the top shell portion, I got a small amount of tape and wrapped it around the lever. Got me a working dreamcast for only a mere fiver
