Re: Game Sack - Really Bad Games!
great episode, but y'all only scratched the surface. We need some sequel episodes!
Oh and Joe, I'm really jealous of that Night Trap shirt.

Scratching my head why you used the Genesis port of Pit Fighter and not the very, very, very worse snes port.

Every version of Pit Fighter is bad, Luke.Luke wrote:Scratching my head why you used the Genesis port of Pit Fighter and not the very, very, very worse snes port.

I wouldn't say the Genesis port is terrible as even as the reviewers say "it's a decent port". And yes, a decent port of crap is still crap, but Pit-Fighter was the closest thing to BLOODSPORT/KICKBOXER that we had to play as kids. I've yet to hear why this game is an abomination. I find crushing opponents with motorcycles kind of fun, and it's one of the first fighting games I remember with interactive crowds/vehicles plus it also featured nude graffiti.
In this review, all we are told is that the controls are very responsive, it's a good port, and the reviewer used to like it. It's now a "tumor of a game" (ugh) because it hasn't "aged well" and the game's score stinks. And it certainly isn't easy and my Mother certainly couldn't beat it. Hell, I actually just played it and barely beat it:

Pit Fighter is by no means a great game, but I don't see why it is treated as the red headed step child of video games. There are thousands of games that are way worse.
Re: Game Sack - Really Bad Games!
Because that's what we had. Contrary to popular belief, we don't have access to every game. And yes, it really is quite easy.Luke wrote:Scratching my head why you used the Genesis port of Pit Fighter and not the very, very, very worse snes port.
Re: Game Sack - Really Bad Games!
Agreed! I quite liked it back in the day too, and in context it is a damn fine game.Luke wrote:

Admittedly though, I would argue that the SNES port of Pit-Fighter does deserve this treatment. I realize that the game itself isn't terrible, but there really are no redeeming factors for this port. Instead, you get this:dsheinem wrote:Agreed! I quite liked it back in the day too, and in context it is a damn fine game.Luke wrote:

All visual indicators have been replaced by bare bones numerical equivalents.
Sprites are miniscule and generally devoid of color. Backgrounds fare worse and become little more than drab representations of what the much superior Genesis port was capable of showing.
Music is limited to a single track. Some sequences where speech is supposed to occur are devoid of sound, despite character sprites still making motions.
Options are nonexistent. Difficulty is based on the character you choose to play...
...because so many frames of animation were cut from all characters. As a result, the easiest way to beat the game is the martial artist because he has a 1-frame elbow attack.
The concept of winning money is removed.
Control is poorly developed for combat and generally devolves into spamming whatever fast attack you can pull off and hoping it registers.
All multiplayer options were removed.
All items were removed from the game. Also, audience interaction is non-existent.
So yeah...the actual game of Pit-Fighter is really not as bad as people claim, and it can be a fun game. But the SNES port's best use is more educational, to show what happens to a game that is given to a team which obviously does not understand the capabilities of the hardware they are porting to.

You show recorded proof, from start to finish with no cheats that you can 1cc Pit Fighter on the Genny (date after 11/4/12 needed) and I'll donate $20 in the name of Redifer to our annual charity auction/donation. Show proof your Mom can 1cc it w/o cheats I'll raise that to $50.
You've just been donaled, and no I'm not proud of saying that.
Re: Game Sack - Really Bad Games!
For sure. The snes version could be a case study of "how not to port" a game. The Genesis version isn't a bad port as even the reviewer states.Ack wrote:

There are tons of moves in the game, not just "A, B, and C", and Pit Fighter as the reviewer mentions has great controls. The interactive environments are a ton of fun, especially the levels where you can throw your opponents on to cars to destroy both.
And Redifire, I promise I'm not trying to bait you or be a dick. A paid hobby of mine is being a critic, and when people say "this sucks" without explaining why "it sucks", I don't get it.
