Attempting to open PS3 Slim to fix rattling noise of drive

Post by JC48573 »

This happened like few months ago and I'm starting to see that the situation has gotten worse. Noise sounds like this every time I play a game.

This is very similar (or exactly) as ziggy587's thread on the Wii drive noise - http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 17&t=26498

does anybody here has a good tutorial site with pictures for the slim ps3?

This is like going back in time where I used to fix ps2 for people.

Since it's the same style drive as the Wii, I would assume it's very similar in design. If you can't find a guide, I think you'll be alright. Just read through all the info I posted in the Wii thread and apply that knowledge to the PS3. It might look a little different, but it's gotta be very similar. Just use your head and I think you'll be alright.

As I posted in the other thread, the two biggest tips I can give you... Use a junk disc (blank CD-R or DVD-R or a beat up unusable disc) so if you accidentally scratch it up it wont be a big deal. And just be very careful when you're tinkering around the spinning drive. To find out what's really going on, you'll have to have the disc spinning while the console is opened up. Just take your time and be careful when you're tinkering.

I'll just reiterate the main thing about fixing the Wii drive noise, in case it's out shined in the Wii thread. While the console is opened and the disc is spinning, use small tools to press, pull, poke, whatever at various points. You're looking to move something (the slightest bit) that will make the noise go away. Once you've found that, then you've got a good idea how to fix it.

This is all assuming that your PS3 has the same/similar problem the Wii had.

edit: By the way, I don't know if I got my point across in the Wii thread, but the noise was absolutely maddening for me! I feel for you. I hope you get it fixed!

I really want to know what the cause of this and I think I have an idea of why. My mom likes to clean the room a lot and one time she moved it and what I had was a ps3 that was tilted because it was sitting on top of the power cord on one of the corners. I really have no idea how long I have been playing with a tilted console, but I imagine that constant spinning of the disc at an angle might have caused the motor drive to move a bit.

First off, why not just maintain one Thread for this problem so old information is not researched again?

As for one corner lifted up slightly sitting on a power cord, should not have affected the PS3 unless the air vent was blocked. Hopefully you leave the PS3 horizontal as it is more stable to preven an accidental tip over bump during the cleaning.

The other Thread maybe a merge? - http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 44&t=40441

I would like to merge them. Didn't know where to go first.

And to reply to your comment, the console was not completely horizontal for a good period of time. I don't know, I take my words back. Maybe it was something else.

Best to keep it flat, it may have been bumped and fell without you knowing it. In addition the airflow is better in the Horizontal position. Nice trick with the QTip in your video. Might strain the motor but at least it helped to narrow down the problem. It does point to something on the disc clamp mechanism. Does the vibration go away if you apply pressure instead to the motor housing?

I can't fix it. Not sure what the deal is. I know for sure is the magnetic spindle, but it's not like the Wii where you can flex it. PS3 slim has this magnetic round piece that can be taken off easily. I moved it slightly and it helped a little, but every time I load the game it starts making the noise. You have to move it every time. I am assuming it's hitting/grazing something and maybe the motor is at an angle causing it to the spindle to lean against another surface. Another thing I realize is that this affects CG cutscenes to stutter sometimes. I'm just going to assume drive is dying.

people are telling me that there's a good chance the drive is not aligned properly causing this to be unbalanced when read. anybody knows how to fix this? they said I may need to take blue drive apart.
