Replacing a PSOne laser/internal stuff

Post by retrosportsgamer »

I have a PSOne (complete with LCD screen) that powers on like a champ (to the memory card screen) but doesn't spin discs at all.

Does anyone have experience with replacing these (are their parts out there for this?)? I'd appreciate a point in the right direction to get started. Thanks.

If it's anything like the original PSX, just buy another for cheap and swap the lasers. They are really easy to remove and replace, it's as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting two cables.

Clean the lens and check the door switch. I normally do not recommend adjusting the potentiometer, but if a dead unit might be worth a try. If your PSOne is not modded then no reason to gut a replacement PSOne if you go that route.

I would check out the pinswitch for the disc door before you consider replacing the laser. When you have the disc door closed, does it attempt to spin the disc at all or does it go straight to the menu and give you an error message?

a better test is to push the lid sensor in with no disk on the spindle, if you can see the lens moving up and down to try and focus, the switch is good. sometimes the drive wont spin up if the laser cant see a disk.
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:

Thanks guys - I did test out the latch while the PSOne was powered on and could not get the laser to do anything. Sounds like there is a small piece rolling around in there also. I'm going to probably auction it off as-is since the LCD is in nice shape (you can see the one pixel on the far left in this picture).
