PS1 games on PS3 on CRT TV

Post by MastaM »

Hi all,

So i'm a PS1 RPG fanatic and have tried many different methods to see how my PS1 games look on different tv's, cables, etc.

The latest thing i've tried, which I actually never tried before, was PS1 games on a PS3 on a Sony WEGA CRT TV with a component cable. I'm thinking this may be the best possible way to view PS1 titles (in the US since we don't use RGB Scart) and enable smoothing on PS3. Everybody knows PS1 games look shit on PS3 if through an LCD.

I wanted to gain y'alls opinion on this and maybe recommend what you did for the best picture quality for PS1 games.

Thanks in advance

No, granted the lcd screen is of decent quality and 1080p it will look very nice and rasor sharp. Never enable smoothing.
But like you said component, since no RGB scart is in the US would probably be the best way.

Agreed. Never enable smooth filtering.

Since you're using CRT, upgrade composite for S-video for further improved results.

What's so bad about smooth filtering?
I've got no signature.

You're best off actually with component cables from a ps2 on a CRT. Ps1 games won't display in proper 240p on the ps3, everything is bumped up to 480i minimum by default. Plus compatibility is a little better on ps2, but whether that matters depends on what games you're playing.

No. Just because Component is used it does not mean 480p unless enabled for a supported game. The extra cable offers better separation, SVideo would be a downgrade.

I rather play PS1 games on a regular PS1. The parallel port has a nice instant load cheat cart slot to further "enhance" the game. Then there are the music CD add to the games that just work better with a PS1. VIB Ribbon, Ridge Racer and Internal Section comes to mind.

Actually prefer the the sharper quality S-Vid provides over anything Component offers to software that doesn't support 480p. As a matter of fact, I still prefer Svid over component even for games that do make use of it. Prog Scan thru PS2 looks awful.

I actually think PS1 games through my PS3 via HDMI with smoothing on (for most games) look fantastic.
