Ok, to be honest, I have never even heard there's a free version now, because every time I go there they go straight for the up sell. I suppose this is more a problem with the people working at my local store then.

Lately I've felt like I need to be deloused after stepping into a GameStop. Their stores kind of look like crap now. There are lots of paper sleeve cases, generic DVD cases with the titles printed on that stock GameStop paper, and just lots of stuff with sticker residue and god-knows-what residue on them. Cases are kind of littered everywhere, and they're always blaring televisions that cycle through the same loop of crap. I don't know how the employee's can stand those televisions, I get bored with the same looping videos and the boinky-boinky sound effects from just 10 minutes of shopping there. And they all seem to have the same garish lighting and cramped space. It's just an unpleasant shopping experience.

If you have a paid one and let it 'expire', it will turn into a free one. But that isn't going to save you. They'll still bug you to upgrade to the paid one.

I can see his point. People want the "mom & pop" experience from GameStop, but GameStop isn't a "mom & pop" place, it's a corporate chain.

Some people online seem pretty upset about this new sub-chain. I guess gamers will find a reason to bitch about anything associated with GameStop.

I don't have any kids, but I think it's a pretty neat idea for anyone who does. Might help out sales for E-rated titles, which I absolutely welcome. I just hope they don't filter out such games entirely at their regular stores. Then I'd have to make another post in this thread.

Am I right in my understanding that the Gamestop closures of the last year and a half (both in the US and Europe, though GSKids isn't coming to the latter, yet) was not a sign of its business suffering, but leading up to the opening of GSKids?

I think GameStop Kids is actually a really good idea. As someone who spent some time in the trenches at GameStop, we spent a lot of time explaining to parents why Grand Theft Auto and God of War were not appropriate purchases for their seven-year-old. Unfortunately, this often fell on deaf ears.

I think that if GameStop Kids can become a more relaxed and welcoming place for parents and little kids I'm all for it.

Maybe I'll find some good stuff in GameStop Kids. Most of my DS games, for instance, are either E or E10+.

I always found it strange that Toys R Us sold M-rated games.
