Quieting the Xbox and Dreamcast
Quieting the Xbox and Dreamcast
Anyone experienced with this? It's a LONG way off, just an idea down the road I should look into having modders do. Probably along with other mods to cut total shipping/labor cost.

I'd imagine you could grease up the DC's gears and rails or something. That disc drive is LOUD.
I don't remember the xbox ever being very noisy, but then again I've only ever played it at friend's houses, never owned one myself.

I've thought about this as well, especially with the Dreamcast. I'm not even sure what's causing most of the noise, is it the drive or the cooling system? I would assume the later could be replaced with some form of heatsink.

Which xbox version you have? I have the original and there was a noisy GPU fan. I replaced it with a heatsink and it's much quieter. See this thread for details.

I've had three or four oXboxes over time, and none of them were loud.

I don't have any complaints with the fan, it's the noise it makes when the laser mechanism is sliding around. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN SHTK. It's only the version 1.0 xbox that has the noisy GPU fan issue. Microsoft fixed it with rev 1.1 through 1.6.BoringSupreez wrote:I've had three or four oXboxes over time, and none of them were loud.
Re: Quieting the Xbox and Dreamcast
As for the Dreamcast, there's not much you can do about the noisy drive. One thing that comes to mind tho is file order. If you read about certain releases such as Dreamcast Resurrection (DCRES), strict attention is paid to file order. Better file order means the drive has to move less, which in turn means less noise. I've even read a few examples where the author claimed better file order than the retail release. I know this only pertains to playing burns, but still good info nonetheless.
Re: Quieting the Xbox and Dreamcast
Two things make a noise in those consoles - the disc drive mechanism and also the fan. You can't do anything about the drive mechanism if you're using a disc drive; the fan of course is easy - adapt the case to use a quiet and much larger fan as you can get more air moving around a large fan than a small one with less noise.

I suppose if you wanted to get creative with the DC, you could line the inside of the disc drive lid with a thin layer of sound dampener. I suppose the same could apply to the Xbox, but I'm sure you'd have to be a little more careful there to not create heat issues.
