Hey folks,
So I bought a Hauppauge HD PVR to use for capturing game footage and it had everything I needed: video passthrough (since my retro consoles are across the house from my computer) and S-Video and composite inputs in addition to component.
The problem is that it's not designed to recognize any video signal that's not 480i or higher, which really gets in the way of what I wanted to do. I had heard running the video feed through a DVD recorder before actually going into the Hauppauge will upscale it into a recognizable signal, and it's true... but it introduces about two seconds of audio and video lag that make it impossible to play a game.
So I investigated a powered splitter, or video signal amplifier, to split the signal BEFORE the DVD recorder so I'd have one video feed going to the TV uninterrupted. The problem here was that it made the picture look as ugly as the devil's face. A horrible, fuzzy picture is not what I wanted.
So does anyone have any advice on some kind of workaround here that will help me upscale retro consoles into 480i WITHOUT introducing button lag?
Thanks!

I don't know about upscaling, but one method would be to buy a video amplifier. They can be quite pricy unfortunately. You'd use the amplifier to increase the split signal to stop the fuzz and colour fading.

My A/V Receiver upscales all signals to 1080p before sending it to the TV. So, you can run it through a receiver then to the video capture thing.

You're looking for the wrong equipment. You don't want a 480i signal, unless you never want to find a solution.
My advice is to look for a line doubler. Input 240p, outputs 480P. It'll make all your 240p (SNES, Genesis, PC Engine, Saturn, PS1 etc.) consoles shine again. And this line doubler will fix your PVR thing.
Upscaler, linedoublers, deinterlacers and any info you will ever need
