Visceral Games

Post by Valkyrie-Favor »

Many of my favorite games, like Tactics Ogre, are turn-based and it's the intellectual stimulation that keeps me coming back. Others, like Mega Man, are a physical challenge for me to overcome.

Sometimes, I derive pleasure from the simple act of playing a game. Defender, OutRun 2, Mirror's Edge, Soulcalibur 2. These are the games I come back to. They have some kind of "game feel" that makes me feel directly connected to the game mechanics.

Playing Defender feels so physical! Running into an alien rocks me. It's like getting hit by a left hook I never saw coming. I'm better at boxing than I am at Defender ;)

What gives you that "game feel?: Is it something you seek out?

Well, even if it's intellectual or mostly a challenge, it can still be visceral to me. That's what I like about video games. They are many things at once and engage a lot of the senses and faculties.
