Saturn - Regular, Hi, V - Which to buy

Post by Nyukki »

I'm in the market for a modded Sega Saturn, and have found some sellers locally who have some models in good condition. Wondering if there is a difference performance or reliability-wise between the regular model, Hi-Saturn (not Navi) and the V-Saturn other than just the manufacturer.

Am currently leaning towards a White regular Saturn as it would look good next to my Dreamcast and the seller has a matching white 3D controller to go with it, but should the V or Hi versions be in anyway superior I may change my mind.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Wikipedia:

Sega HST-3220 (White Japanese model)

"Sega switched from blue to gray & pink buttons during the production run. This controller was a matching white with multi-colored buttons similar to a Super Famicom controller with the bottom row buttons colored green, yellow, and blue. The 'white' plastic is a very light gray and shares its color with the later Dreamcast. The cartridge flap is visibly gray. Limited models of the Saturn had oval buttons. Later units have some compatibility problems."
Looking at the Wiki it doesn't mention any technical differences other than these apparent compatibility problems that later white Japanese models had. Anyone know more about this?

It's an online seller on Taobao selling all three. In the ad it states they all run fine, guess I can ask him about compatability.

Whatever's most cost effective. Almost all Saturns are designed so similar there's little point for regular users to spend extra.

Once you get into modding, bonus features, or a handful of game compatibility differences, then the models gain value to check up on.

I picked up a Hi-Saturn MMP-11 last year in mint condition because it came with the original MPEG card. Lunar TSSS was my main reason for purchasing but I am adding to my Japanese Saturn collection as I go.
