Attack of the Show and X-Play Cancelled by G4

Farewell, Attack of the Show and X-Play. TVGuide.com is reporting that the two long-running G4 series are coming to an end, as the cable undergoes a rebranding that will turn away from its geek-friendly past.

The final episodes of both will air in December, and leading up to the finale will be rotating guest co-hosts joining current AOTS hosts Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood and X-Play hosts Morgan Webb and Blair Herter, including John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Horatio Sanz.

TVGuide.com says both shows will have a series of farewell episodes that will include former guests and hosts returning, along with re-airing favorite segments from the past, including AOTS’s coverage of San Diego Comic-Con and X-Play’s E3 coverage.

"Attack of the Show and X-Play have been important for G4, and we want to acknowledge the creative people who have helped inspire and showcase the phenomenon of gamer culture," G4 Media general manager Adam Stotsky tells TV Guide. "With more than 3,000 episodes aired between them, we have more than enough great material to honor these innovators and their amazing contributions as we bring both shows to a close."

TVGuide.com says there is talk that G4 may be looking to partner with Esquire or another men’s magazine like GQ as it moves forward into “more upscale, sophisticated guy TV space.” The network may be renamed G4Men, among other possibilities.

It really sucks that the last video game show on the video game network is being cancelled. What's the freaking point of G4 even existing anymore? So we can watch Cheaters, Cops, and Ninja Warrior over and over and over again? This network is a freaking joke anymore!

Attack of the Show I'm not so sorry to see go. That show was a complete piece of crap that only existed so Kevin Pierra could publicly flirt with his hot co-hosts.

It's sad. I used to LOVE G4 when it actually was the video game network. Icons I especially loved.

Attack of the Show was completely moronic, but I used to occasionally watch X-Play when I had cable service a few years ago. It was pretty cool. I liked that Adam Sessler guy, seems like he genuinely liked video games and knew what he was talking about, whereas it was obvious most of the hosts on those video game shows were just script reading and had no idea/didn't really care what they were talking about.

This reminds me of how MTV slowly became less and less about music and is now the asshole of the television world and airs nothing but drama reality shows.

All cable channels are slowly moving towards a singularity in which all of them are essentially clones of each other.

Weren't these the guys who called Beatmania a Guitar Hero ripoff? If so, I'm happy they were cancelled.

I don't have cable, but that seems about right based on what I see when I'm at places with it.

I read a small blurp about this last night. It's all very sad. I didn't really care for Attack of the Show that much, but I used to love X-Play. I have a lot of fond memories of coming home to watch it and enjoying the reviews, even if I had no interest in the game or owned the system they were talking about. I suppose I should have seen the demise coming, what with Sessler's departure, but it's still sad. I didn't think they'd both just be cancelled like that :(
