I don't actually care much for the gothic Freddy look. However, at the same time I like that they made him look different. It was unique. And actually, now that you bring it up I'd be willing to bet that dsheinem would probably enjoy New Nightmare more than the 6 preceeding films. In my mind it kind of stands alone as its own film kind of outside the actual series -- for obvious reasons.

Hatchet II

I think I watched the whole film with the following two predominate looks on my face:
Still, it was awesome. I don't think I've been that surprised by the amount of violence and gore in a film since I watched Dead Alive.

Is he really going to-...Yes, yes he is.
Hatchet II is essentially an homage to the slasher flicks of yore. It doesn't have a single original bone in it's deformed and mutilated corpse, but the level at which it commits itself to reveling in it's own blood and gore is commendable. You've gotta respect a movie that knows exactly what it is, goes for it, and doesn't bother to lead the viewer on. It doesn't just revel in the blood it's spilt, it wriggles in it.
It doesn't hurt that the movie's also peppered with familiar horror-related names and faces. Just watching the movie's opening credits left me in a state of slasher-geek bliss. For the first 30 or so minutes, just about every time the scene would change, you'd be looking at a familiar face. I found myself pointing at the screen saying, "..and I know you...and you....and you...." It was new and yet very nostalgic.
I'll admit though, for a while I kept looking at the screen and thinking that that didn't look like Danielle Harris. I mean, I knew it was her, but after watching freaking' Halloween 4 and 5 on AMC for a week it just wasn't clicking. Then she made that face, you know the one

That's it!
And all was right in my muddled mind.
One thing that didn't click so well with me was the humor. I enjoyed a lot of the sight gags (hurry up and get on that boat, fat boy), but some of the dialogue....
. I don't know if it was a result of focusing too much on the action (not that it wasn't appreciated) or spitting the script out too fast, but most of the jokes didn't just fall flat, they fell like a huge hunk of lead plummeting towards the earth. Perhaps it's just too crude for my tastes.
But you don't watch slashers for the dialogue, you watch them for the kills and this movie has some seriously freaky imagery. What may have been done before and looked mundane on paper was exquisite in execution. Never before have I seen a chainsaw that big.

I don't think I could even lift that thing.
The final death in particular was probably one of the most amazingly gruesome things I've ever seen and Danielle Harris.....damn. I imagine that ending had to be really cathartic for her

Holy mother of god, you weren't kidding.KillerJuan77 wrote:Also... Hatchet II is insanely gory and violent ...

Great horror movie that I enjoyed a lot, too. But I don't think any of the Nightmare movies top the original.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Definitely. It goes off the rails a bit at the end - and the earthquake footage was distracting - but I thought that it was genuinely enjoyable, intelligent horror film. (That, and - in my opinion - it has the best version of Freddy.)noiseredux wrote:I like New Nightmare. I kind of feel like it was testing the waters for the kind of self-aware material that Craven would fully expand on in Scream a few years later.
I also don't think it works well as a stand-alone movie, either. You're not gonna enjoy a lot of the scenes nearly as much as you would if you've seen the original NOES.

I thought Hatchet II was way better than the first. Danielle Harris and Tony Todd probably helped. But just all around. Better.

I am embarrassed to say that I've never seen the first one (I know, I know. I'm a bad slasher fannoiseredux wrote:I thought Hatchet II was way better than the first. Danielle Harris and Tony Todd probably helped. But just all around. Better.
Also, I just found out that TCM will be airing SPINE TINGLER! THE WILLIAM CASTLE STORY tomorrow night. It's a documentary about William Castle, director and producer of many a B-movie, but to stay more relevant to this thread that includes films like House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts. Directly after that they'll be playing one of his movies, MACABRE. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone was interested. I know I'll be watching the first one and probably DVRing the second. Damn TCM for showing stuff at 4:45AM >_<

Re: noiseredux October horror film spooktacular 2012
the first Hatchet is alright. It was really hyped locally when it came out because Adam Green is from New England. So it was kind of like "oh, we should really see this to support the guy." I liked it. But it wasn't anything I needed to see twice really. There is one absolutely amazing kill in that movie though that makes it worth seeing once.
Oh and hey, apparently Hatchet III finished filming and Danielle Harris is still in it. Nice.

The original FRIGHT NIGHT.
Due to a limited release, this puppy costs over $200 on Blu Ray. It's a shame, because every male over the age of thirteen should own this film (and its soundtrack). I want to compare Fright Night to a few other films that it borrows elements from, but that wouldn't be fair to the film as it is truly something original.
It's as if any regular guy would be more than happy to trade shoes with any of the male characters, save for the bouncer who has his neck slashed, and creepy Mc.Smiley green goop sandy pants. You've got the teenage boy who not only does good but gets the girl, a seductive vampire that has no issues getting any woman he wants (and can fly), the wayward teenage boy that gains incredible powers, and the old fogy down on his luck only to gain back his confidence and convictions.
But what I truly love about this movie is how much fun it is. I'd go as far to say it is as much an adventure film as it is a horror film. Not a scene is wasted, and everything flows seamlessly.
If you haven't watched FRIGHT NIGHT, make it a priority. You'll thank me for the recommendation. I give it two super pointy thumbnails up.

Re: noiseredux October horror film spooktacular 2012

I just watched Ernest Scared Stupid for the first time in probably a decade or more. When I was an elementary school-aged kid I used to watch the Ernest movies many, many times over (Goes to Camp was always my favorite), and while the movies are not especially geared towards adults, they still offer some laughs and can be fun to watch through nostalgia goggles.

Scared Stupid always impressed me with how well it was able to tread the line between spooky and silly. I like the effects work (the troll pods and troll deaths hold up pretty well) and there's lots of great slapstick to be found throughout. Like any Ernest movie you have to take the dumb with the fun, but this is one of the better Ernest films in my estimation, and one that has aged better than most.

Ernest...I thought I had forgotten all about you. One look at those images, however, and all the memories came flooding back...

Scared Stupid was a favorite of mine growing up. We rented it from the library a couple weeks ago, but put it on too late and fell asleep before it was over. Hopefully we'll get to see it again before the 31st.
