Sounds like something for the Assembler forums.

Maybe they could make this their next project and we sponsor the reverse engineering...
I'm sure you could get quite a few people on board with a kickstarter (or something similar if that sort of thing isn't allowed), but if those $100,000+ figures are even close to accurate, I don't think they'll be able to raise quite enough.

I'd really love for someone who actually understands this stuff better to weigh in.

Maybe I'll make a thread on ASSEMbler's forum one of these days.

If I do, and something comes up, I'll let you know...

Steam irritates me. Not because it's so big, but, because 90% of the games I buy from other services require it. There's almost no point in me using GamersGate. :?

I know. I was kinda disappointed the first time I bought a digital game off Amazon and discovered they don't have their own service.

Might depend on the game. Some titles out there (like ones pictured here) are Steamworks titles no matter where you get them. You could buy a physical copy, and all it'd be is a Steam installer cache (effectively).

The only game I've bought digitally on Amazon was Final Fantasy XI: Abyssea Edition (I was starting a dualbox character). That shows up as a direct download on the "Your Games and Software Library" page of my Amazon account, along with the registration codes.

Personally, I prefer having things consolidated like that. If I'm going to get something that's utilizing a Steam-like model where it's tied to a service, I'd rather it just be Steam, where nearly all my other titles like that reside (screw you EA/Origin).

I don't mind Steam. Great games, great prices, and fantastic sales.

It's GOG that pisses me off. I'm having trouble with my games I've downloaded from them and they want to give me like zero support regarding it.

When cutscenes play on my GOG games, I can hear the video, but I can't see it. And I don't have this problem on my physical media games.

The best advice I've gotten is to run the games as "Administrator", run them in compatability mode, and update your video driver...well no duh! Like I didn't already try that stuff. After I told them that (nicer than that), they pretty much threw up their arms. :x

Far as I know, most (if not all) games offered by GoG are utilizing DOSBox, so it might be an issue of how that is handling the scenes in question. Might be that their tech support is considering it more from the standpoint of making DOSBox run, and not that the configuration for that game might need to change.

I mean, they should still try to help with it or submit a ticket up the chain, but I could sorta see if maybe it's not the area they tend to deal with.

It depends on which games you are playing, but many GOG games have a gog setup file where you can switch around graphics options. Not all games have it, but when you look at your gog games in your Windows Start menu, you will often see "setup" next to the game exe. Have you messed around with those options yet?

I think I'm going to just start using Racketboy (and RF Gen, though I haven't bought anything there yet, they seem like cool guys) for almost all of my retro gaming purchases. I'm always consistently finding good deals, and it seems like anything i might ever need will always pop up on here with a good price sooner or later.

Plus it's fun to start scanning the B/S/T every couple of weeks just to see what's available. I don't really get the chance to go out and 'hunt' very often, but it's pretty close to just skim through here!

Not a bad idea. Plus it's always fun to be able to haggle, it's not like on ebay where some sellers put up a best offer option and automatically set it to decline offers that aren't their asking price. haha
