I am not sure if I am still in the 3rd world, but since when was 10mbs not so fast? This should be like lightening . Have standards changed?
Plus no one answered my question about Steam, at 10GB per game its no surprise people run out of bandwidth. Let alone updates. Is this the norm now? 10GB game? I used to complain about 500mb games! btw its Team Fortress 2.

I understand the thing about having to take data from over the oceans is going to slow down the connection, and I understand most servers are in USA so every one will face this if he is outside The Americas. But I do not think it will go down to 10% of the connection's speed like I got on Steam.
I also understand that a low spec server with slow connection I cant get a fast download from, but this should not be happening on Youtube and Steam, should it? See image, I have been downloading this file for about 7 hours now over 2 days. Is this how its supposed to be?
quick Out of Topic: Do I have to be running steam or connected to the internet to play Steam games? is there DRM free games on steam?

FWIW, youtube has been complete ass for me for nearly a near now even though I'm in the US. I often pause to let it buffer, but of course their stupid buffering system will only do so much before it waits for you now. I have a better experience if I save a damn video, which is of course exactly what they don't want you doing.
You should be able to play most of your Steam games in offline mode once they're installed and verified. But of course once they're downloaded, there's not really any waiting around to play anyway even with a slow connection.

Yeah, I guessed it was their issue because its just too slow. I wonder why they do this, you might think they do not have enough money but they are google and they have monopoly on internet video , so why not any faster?
Whats funny is that they have the space to store each video in 3-4 different versions(240-360-480-720-1080) but not a little bit more speed.

10gb for a game download is about right. Usually over 7gb for sure. PlanetSide 2 is something like 15-20gb. That took a while.
Internet is a bit weird right now. A lot of people have been left with no upgrade in speed for years but then others, such as myself, have faster and faster speeds available every year. If we were willing to pay for it, we could get 40mb/s down in my house right now. Which would be fantastic.
As is though, I have no trouble watching 1080p streams or YouTube. I just click play and it loads much, much quicker than I can watch. Probably about 30 seconds for a 5 minute video in 1080p.
Unfortunately, Steam can't upload fast enough for my download speed so faster internet wouldn't help me much there. I cap out at about 4mb/s down on their servers. With torrents, I've seen up to 12 down, which is plenty fast enough for me.

@Ryantheslaya
Where do you live where you get such fast internet, and how much does it cost to get the 40mbs connection?
Things are getting weird, people are getting faster internet than servers can upload . I also do not understand why internet speeds are not increasing for everyone. Personally , 10mbs has recently came in and its expensive($106/month) , while I understand 10mbs has been in the US for a very long time.
at 15GB per game I think there is still a lot of place for physical games , maybe digital will have to wait for a while
its funny how everytime hardware catches up they increase the demands. Internet is super convenient to get SD movies now, but they made hd. It became fast enough to get 1GB games, but they make 15Gb games. its a spiral

I've been wondering if they had indeed changed. I have a strong dislike for this stuttering or stopping midway videos so I have been saving the whole video myself, with keepvid. What do you use, Hobie?.Hobie-wan wrote:FWIW, youtube has been complete ass for me for nearly a near now even though I'm in the US. I also noticed their ads are becoming extremely intrusive nowadays.

Re: Internt speeds, does it affect browsing?
My video timeline stops moving, it resets but the video continues to play on with out me able being to pause, stop, or move around the video timeline. If I want to hear something again or missed a part, I have to reload all over again.ninjainspandex wrote:something with youtube has changed im sure because lately ive been having a problem where videos load without sound and i have to refresh the page to get the sound to load.
I am fed up of youtube being a monopoly, we need competition. Not sure why no competitors coming up. Vimeo is not cutting it

That's the catch isn't it? Youtube has plenty of competitors, they're just all really crappy.kingmohd84 wrote: I am fed up of youtube being a monopoly, we need competition. Not sure why no competitors coming up. Vimeo is not cutting it
