The Orphanage AKA, El Orfanato


I really liked this one. It has some good shock effects, but doesn't fall into only trying to use cheap thrills. I think I've mentioned before, that I appreciate some subtlety in my horror films, and I feel this one falls into that category. CGI, when present, is kept to a minimum. So no jerky ghosts (Hurray!).

One of the nicest things about this movie is it's use of atmosphere. Shots linger, focusing on where you are and letting you get a real feel for it. Color is used appropriately, mostly muted in tone, especially later in the film, with splashes of bright hues added for emphasis.

Another nice thing about this movie is that the characters are fleshed out so that you actually feel sympathy for them. Roger Príncep is a cute little kid and Belén Rueda in particular, who plays the mother Laura, is excellent. I could have turned the subtitles off and still felt for that woman. Her husband Carlos on the other hand....not so much. In fact, he's pretty 'meh', but Príncep and Rueda are the main participants here, so I think that's a minor point.

I don't know if I'd go so far to call it a horror movie though. The movie focuses on Laura and her grief, more than the mystery of house and any potential ghost(s) that might inhabit it. Still, even if I feel it's a bit limited in the horror aspects, I still feel it's one of the better ghost stories I've seen in quite a while. A definite recommendation for anyone who enjoys a good haunted house (or in this case, orphanage) tale.

On a side note, I've heard they're planning on making a remake already, possibly starring Amy Adams. As much as I like Amy Adams, I'm afraid to find out about all the changes they'll be sure to make to the Americanized version. I'm sure if they do than my beloved subtlety will fly right out the window.

I love the 1980's one (Joe Spinnel should have gotten an Oscar) but I didn't knew there was a 1930's one. I'll check it out.

BTW Get the Blue Undeground Blu-Ray, it looks as good as it's ever going to look and the uncompressed audio and goodies just makes it better.

I just wrapped it up. It was fun and had some great moments (e.g. the car scene, the second to last scene, etc.), but it also had some thick cheese that was hard to swallow (the last scene, some of the actions of characters). I agree that Spinnel was quite compelling. He also reminded me a lot of Ron Jeremy.

tbh I think I like the 1930s one more, at least in some respects. You'll have to tell me what you think, Noise. Don't be a douche.

I will tell you what I think. But knowing how our tastes differ, I'm going to place my money on me not liking the 30's one nearly as much as the 80's one. This is based on the fact that I had no trouble swallowing any so-called cheese.

Halloween 4 The Return of Michael Myers

My wife pointed out that we almost never watch 4. Not sure why. We've seen 5 so many times, that I almost forgot that there was a movie where the Jamie character could talk. Good stuff though. This was actualy the first Halloween movie I saw when I was a little kid. My friend made me watch it and it scared me big time. True story: the staircase at the end reminded me of the staircase in my house and I was horrified to go upstairs alone for weeks after seeing this.
