Random Gaming Thoughts
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I get the Spartan urge, too, but I think I would deeply regret selling off all my games, especially the ones I constantly play. It's just not the same on a computer.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I can't wait for my GCW Zero, everytime I get into the subway with jsut music I feel so lonely, I need a console to give me warm love.
Anyways, I'm thinking of doing a Nuzlocke challenge, probably a variant. Looks like fun to write about

That's why I'm still keeping certain systems/games, just not all of them. Most things I think will be satisfying enough via emulation, such as games that I just want to try or are only fun for 5-10 minutes at a time, games that I really have no intention of finishing (or playing all the way through again) and that sort of thing.o.pwuaioc wrote:I get the Spartan urge, too, but I think I would deeply regret selling off all my games, especially the ones I constantly play. Is it the EEPROMs that are hard to find, or is it that simply noone has taken the effort to read what's on them?...AppleQueso wrote:Ugh, I really wish there was a way to RGB mod an NES that didn't involve gutting increasingly hard to find Playchoice-10 boards for their PPUs.
Why hasn't anyone reverse engineered and cloned that PPU yet? Seems like there'd at least be a little bit of a market for it. Perhaps they could find a way to get the actual normal NES color palette back on it while they're at it.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I hate when games ask stupid questions that interrupt flow. I'm playing Jericho right now, and it's great fun, except that I die a fair amount and every time you die it says "Do you want to restart at the last checkpoint?" followed by "Are you sure you want to restart at the last checkpoint?".
The first question is unnecessary. When I die, have me restart. Assume I want to play and trust that I will tell you when I want to quit. But to add the confirmation message on top of the original unecessary question is just assanine. It's extra annoying because WASD doesn't control up/down in the menu screen, so I have to displace my hands to the arrow keys, or I have to click on a tiny message with my mouse. Then, the default for the 2nd confirmation question is 'No', so I always have to move it over to 'Yes'.
It's a small complaint, but it really feels like the game doesn't want me to play it and it annoys the hell out of me.

I think it's a combination of both. You have to rip the PPUs out of Nintendo Playchoice-10 arcade boards. People spend hundreds to have those transplanted into their NES so they can get better video, and even then they have to deal with innaccurate, sometimes really gaudy colors.elmagicochrisg wrote:Is it the EEPROMs that are hard to find, or is it that simply noone has taken the effort to read what's on them?...AppleQueso wrote:Ugh, I really wish there was a way to RGB mod an NES that didn't involve gutting increasingly hard to find Playchoice-10 boards for their PPUs.

For whatever reason nobody has tried to clone it though. IDK if PPUs are even EEPROMs, I mean they're video processors so that should be totally different, right?

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I'm absolutely no expert, but if you can find the right empty EEPROMS I'm sure you could write them with the extracted code from the original. If you can find the right empty ones, and if those are EEPROMS on the board...AppleQueso wrote:For whatever reason nobody has tried to clone it though. I'm sure if they are EEPROMS, and you can do the above, it would be peanuts to make the rest of the board...
I know there's a few people here that make replicas. So they might be able to give you a more adequate answer...
By the way, those things are fucking expensive. Only one on eBay, for only 199USD...
And it looks like an EEPROM with a heat sink on top...
EDIT
Why we can't just copy the PC-10 PPU RC2C03B
PlayChoice 10 Game PCB Cloning/ Coping/ Re-Engineering
This stuff is way over my head... lol

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I'm the opposite. I HATE emulation; I'd much rather play the original versions. The only time I try it is w/ games that were never ported to a console.

It's kinda over my head too, but the gist of it seems to be that no, we can't just clone the PPU because it'd be crazy expensive and highly impractical.elmagicochrisg wrote: EDIT

aww
guess i could always save up $700 for a famicom titler or something (lol yeah right). Gutting a Playchoice-10 for a video mod doesn't sit very well with me.

Sounds like something for the Assembler forums.AppleQueso wrote:It's kinda over my head too, but the gist of it seems to be that no, we can't just clone the PPU because it'd be crazy expensive and highly impractical.
Maybe they could make this their next project and the community sponsors the reverse engineering...
