The I <3 Coins Thread.
Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
I don't actively collect/look for coins but I do have a few that I have kept. Such as a half dollar that my mom gave me forever ago, a Canadian 10 and 5 cent piece (both of which my girlfriend spotted and I probably wouldn't have even noticed), a couple of wheat pennies and some variations of the US quarter.
Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
I don't have a collection at all. My dad has a great one that we've attained solely from digging it up from the earth. Metal detecting was a great pastime of my childhood, and many of weekends as a kid I spent romping in the woods with my Dad at old farmhomes, near military barracks, schoolyards, you name it. We found a wide range of coins, silver war bullets on the shores of the Potomac, and even some jewelry for my Mom. I really enjoyed those days where the metal detector would hum. The thrill of the hunt would build so much in the course of those few moments. From getting that first hit on the detector, to digging it out of the ground, and then finally seeing what it was after all that hard work. It's something I'll be sure to try when I have kids.
Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
I've got a nice coin collection, including some ancient Chinese and Roman coins. Unfortunately, they're still in California. As soon as they're shipped to me, I'll post them.
In the meantime, if anyone does want to send coins to me, I'd be willing to set up a deal.

Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
I have some coins from around the world, and a few American coins circa "1860-1880's". Probably worth nothing but face value.
My Mother, on the other hand, has three coins I hope I one day inherit. She has a Gallic War silver coin during Julius Caesar's reign, as well as a silver coin featuring Brutus. The third one I don't know too much about. It's a coin from the time when Jesus walked the Earth and is related to the parable in Luke 21:1-4.
I'll ask her to take some pictures. Knowing my Mother and technology I can expect couple prints in a few months.

Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
I started collecting coins when I was a kid, but I haven't cared about it for many many years.
I mostly collected Indian Head pennies. I was really lucky and managed to find a 1909-S Indian Head, which are pretty rare. I sold it for a few hundred dollars, which I think is how I could afford a Dreamcast.
Nowadays, I what I mostly have are a stack of Proof sets, which I think are pretty cool. I have a special commemorative book set of coins for the centennial of the Statue of Liberty, which is also the year I was born. I also have a couple Silver Eagles, because I always thought bullion coins were pretty neato.
I also have a little roll of 7 uncut 2-dollar bills, which were a souvenir from a family trip to a mint when I was a kid.
I have a fair amount of Canadian coins, mostly left over from trips to Canada. And I have an uncle who travels all over the world, which resulted in me getting a random variety from a ton of other countries (I think the most common are from Hong Kong). But foreign coins have never been something I seriously cared about.
Oh, I also have a state quarter from every state.

Pictures would be very awesome. I am actually very curious to see what you mean by related to Luke 21 (which, btw, isn't actually a parable), as I don't recall seeing anything like that before.Luke wrote:I have some coins from around the world, and a few American coins circa "1860-1880's". The best bet is for me to take a picture next time I visit my parents, which will most likely be over Thanksgiving.o.pwuaioc wrote: Pictures would be very awesome. Not to get all "religiousy" but everything in a book with talking animals & shrubbery, and a world populated by inbreeding, is a parable to me. The tortoise and the hare teaches a valuable lesson, but I'm not about to pray to Aesop.

Re: The I <3 Coins Thread.
Thread Resurrection!
I opened a quarter roll today at work, Shiny new coins! It was a roll of 2013 Mount Rushmore quarters. As I tore apart the roll, this bad boy came out!

It looked a little different from the others.
Can you guys/gals see the circular shadow? It runs from the H in rushmore across the face of the coin and ends down at the date.
I think the coin got pressed twice before it got pressed one last time. A mispunch I believe.
I thought coins like this are scanned by a computer and then by human eyes to catch mistakes like this?
I guess I just got lucky. Out of thousands of coins I found a messed up one!
I'm glad I saved it.
