The I <3 Coins Thread.

Post by flojocabron »

Hey Ya'll

I have lots of other hobbies too, and Collecting coins is one of them.

I found the other day a nice, pristine, silver WWII 1942 Nickel at work. I set it aside and then I traded it when I got off of work.

I'm always doing that. Sometimes I see some coins as I get change for the customers and put them back and give them other ones. Theres like four registers that have some hidden coins that I have to get back to.

Tonight,I felt a little nostalgic, so I decided to have a look through my coin collection.

Most of my collecion is stuff that I've collected through circulation. I very rarely buy from dealers and the like. There's lots of old coins still available right in your change cup. Maybe you collect from other countries?

Do you look through your pockets for old coins? do you have any collections? I'm sure you do.

post some pics and share your thoughts of another classic hobby!

Heres some of mine for you to stare at  :

When I read the subject I thought this thread was about arcade gaming!

I have an arcade in the mall next to the apartment block where I live but instead of throwing in 50p coins or whatever you have to buy special coin shaped tokens from the counter to throw into the cabs. I miss that feeling I got when I was a kid where you're playing SF2, make it all the way to M. Bison, only barely lose and then, desperate to give it another shot, franticly search your pockets and make your friends do the same while you hear the countdown running.

Where I live there's not a lot of metal change, mostly paper, which sucks 'cause they fill up a jar real fast. Love having my jar of change to buy lunch with when it fills up!

I used to have one of these:

It's a one 'fen' note from the 1950's (1/100 Yuan RMB). Don't think they are in circulation anymore and don't know if at all valuable. Lost it, anyways.

I had posted my foreign money after I found that Iranian coin and asked about it in the other thread. There are a few things my parents gave me and a few from my grandfather, but most of this is stuff I acquired on trips or finding it. I checked my change every day when I worked retail jobs at a register in the past as well. Made sure I always had change in my pocket so I could swap out any coins. Usually it was just a wheat penny every now and then. I collect too much other stuff to actively go after coins and such too, much to Menogrothx's consternation at the moment I'm sure. So this way I don't 'spend money' on it, just keep what crosses my path.

My foreign money as noted before. I have a 10 Reichspfennig my English grandfather got in the war. Canadian coins not included.

I have other 'gold' dollar coins and 2 $10 rolls of bicentennial quarters, but this is the more interesting stuff. Eisenhower dollars from 1971 to 1976 bicentennial. Silver dollars 1935, 1926, and 1921. Kennedy half dollars 1971 to 1997 with a few bicentennial. Silver half dollars 1964 and 1952. Silver quarters 1964 and 1956. Susan B Anthony dollars. Nickels, oldest are a pair from 1939. Silver Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, oldest is 1941. Wheat pennies, oldest is 1919. Two indian pennies, an 1883 given to me by my grandmother and an 1892 given to me by a friend. I'm pretty sure that's the only coin I have that was purchased by anyone.

As far as paper money I have some star serials and $2 bils like many others do despite them not being worth anything extra. I do however have a 1935 $1 silver certificate that made it to me as change when I was 14 or 15 and I nearly spent on pizza as a mall rat. Thankfully it was on top of the stack and I noticed the blue serial and asked for it back and gave a different bill. I also have a 1963 $5 with red serials. Finally I have a 1950 $20 that has a much longer 'legal tender' blurb on it.

I collected coins as a kid, mainly just US coins though. My collection is locked up in a safe at my parents' home.

My father has a MASSIVE coin (and stamp) collection that apparently I'll inherit when he passes.

flojo, do you keep all your coins loose like that? You gotta get some of those little books to snap 'em into. I have a bunch of these:

I also have a US map with most of the state quarters filled in.
