The next big processor

Post by RCBH928 »

It has been sometime since I was on the edge of technology news . While I am sure based on numbers there is a huge difference between i5s and i7s over my core2duo , I am wondering whats the next big thing in processors?

To be honest, while I am sure I will get a backlash from this, I am trying to run Windows games over my macbook using Parallels :D

I know you do lose frames and many games wont run well, but I wonder if there is an upcoming processor that just wont go crazy doing this. Also the games i run are usually older games not 2011 ones.

This is basically the main thing, the other thing is I am hoping for faster video conversion or DVD ripping. I am tired of waiting 1.5 hours with my CPU running at 90c(194F) just to rip a video off a DVD or convert from avi to mp4.

or am I underestimating the i5/7 (I am not sure whats the difference between those 2)?

I am not looking for something coming up next month, I usually wait a long time. So is there something coming around the next 2-3 years? I mean something with a significant jump

You been having a lot of random computer questions lately. I suggest spending some time over at Tom's Hardware forums. After a few weeks, you'll know everything. Seriously.

The i7 has hyperthreading. So 4 cores actually = 8 processing threads. i5 = 4 threads.

First of all, running any CPU at 90C is dangerous and it's going to significantly shorten the lifespan of the processor. You obviously have a cooling problem (whether it's case, or CPU cooler), so you want to get that resolved. Intel chips start throttling at 90C and it's going to cut your performance at least in half.

As for the next "big" thing in processors, the modern Ivy Bridge CPU's are incredibly fast, far faster than Core 2 Duo. You would notice a giant improvement upgrading to a i5 3570K. And I mean giant.

Clean your fans. You must have an unbeliable amount of shit in them to reach that temperature. I don't know how the computer even manages to keep working like that.

He has an Apple laptop as I recall. Apple computers are not exactly known for having good cooling systems, instead preferring a hot, quiet, and pretty approach. My PowerBook G4 12" often hit 89c. I wouldn't be surprised if the new models are just as bad to be honest.

THIS!

My macbook core2duo , reaches 74C and sometimes 80C when I play team fortress 2 on lowest specs. I have an air conditioner on, the fans are running at about 6200rpm , and I have a laptop table with little fans in them(not sure if it helps)I also raise the sides of the laptop with tiny things to keep room for air between the laptop and the table.

I think this might be my last laptop, I really thought those things got over being over-heated and low specs. Boy I was wrong.

btw, I always reached such high temperatures even when my computer was absolutely new I tried to run WoW , I think I reached 82C doing that.

is 74C as bad as 90C?

Everything above, say, 40ºC is bad.

I can't phantom how a computer can be so poorly designed :|

A lot of Windows laptops hit the same temperatures. But you can FEEL the heat a lot more on an aluminum body compared to a plastic one. If you get an ultrabook with a metal body or any other more sleak looking Windows laptop you'll feel that heat too.
