Internt speeds, does it affect browsing?

I update my connection from 4mb/s to 10 mb/s . Now it should be lightening fast, at least according to specs from this part of the world. But I do not feel the internet being any faster. As a matter of fact I actually can still see some images loadings on racket boy.(remember 56k?)

Also Youtube will not load any faster to be honest , if you start watching without pausing it will only load about a minute or so more into the timeline . If you click way further in the video's timeline it will start loading again. I am downloading off Steam Team Fortress 2. I am only getting 200-300kbs(should equal 3mb/s inet speed) . Why does this happen?
i try to use an app on my iPad to watch a 1080p trailer but it stutters and it got stuck because its too much to handle. If people can't watch a 1080p on 10mbs speeds, then who can!?

I would say that my ISP is ripping me off, but when I download using torrent I get 700kb/s->1mb/s . Also during download off steam, I downloaded a small torrent(63mb) and I got speeds like 500kbs , adding that to the running Steam download(300kbs) it adds up to 800kb/s . That is 8mb/s .

Any one why does this happen? Is it possible that Youtube and Steam deliberately limit the download speeds? If so , whats the point of getting faster internet then?


btw, Team Fortress 2 is 10GB?!?! what the hell!! I do not see this cloud thing working at all with downloads so big! I thought it was an error of calculation when it said 10GB. I feel sorry for people who play current games using Steam. I guess thats one good part about being a retro gaming(5mb games! Oh yeah)

From 4mb/s to 10 mb/s ? No, won't affect browsing speed at all.
On the other hand, if like in my case, you went from a 384k line with a max download speed of 40KB/s (no, that's not a typo) to a 1024 kbps line, then yeah, browsing, downloading, streaming videos, etc, would be a huge difference.
I can actually now watch a show of Game Sack without it pausing every few seconds and leaving me to stare endlessly at those two unshaved faces.

You can watch videos without hiccups with 1mbs? thats good, youtube gave me some hard time sometimes wtih 4mbs.

I didn't say without any hiccups. Just that it's a night and day difference to what I had previously.

Don't forget that it's not just your download speed, it's also the other site's upload speed that matters. If you're visiting a website hosted on someone's personal machine that can only upload at 40kbps then you're only going to be able to download at 40kbps, even if your connection is rated higher.

Pulling data from across the ocean versus something in your own country also makes a difference too. Like transporting people, if you're crossing your own country you can drive several routes on roads, fly, take trains, and boats with several combinations of routes. Once you're crossing the ocean suddenly you're filtered through a few international flights or slow boat rides. Less choices are available for the people trying to get there.

The Steam Cloud is just for storing your saves so that they're available if you play on another PC with your account. You'd still have to download the game data on every PC as well.

Run ping and speed tests www.speedtest.net. Of course the ISP's advertised speed doesn't apply to traffic emanating from an overseas server. Retrieving a cached file (e.g. a popular application installer) will be faster than downloading it directly from an FTP server thousands of miles away. Another thing to note is that ISP's tend to swindle customers with unlimited bandwidth offers asterisked by fair usage conditions, which can only be determined truthfully from other ISP customers, since support is rarely honest about such matters (unless the contract states the terms clearly, as it should).

How's this? Went with Comcast for my new apartment, got a decent deal. I liked them and Uverse back at my parents. Surewest was terrible though.

I sure hope Google fiber runs through here eventually.

I have Comcast, but, we haven't had much trouble with them. Our internet's pretty fantastic actually, at least compared to most people in the US. I know several countries in Europe have it better.

In June, I got an upgrade from AT&T's DSL



to Road Runner Lightning



Now something like that is noticeable, but 4mbps to 10mbps is good too. Again, it is distance from computer to server, and also peak times of the day can also slow traffic a bit.
