Always hated FPS games, but Bioshock Infinite.....
looks very interesting. How are the other 2 Bioshock games? Are there any other FPS games just as interesting as Bioshock? What I like? Atmosphere is what draws me in.
Re: Always hated FPS games, but Bioshock Infinite.....
The original Bioshock is pretty good. Most of what's great about it is simply running through the underwater city of Rapture and seeing how promising the city was before its philosophies imploded in on themselves and led to the utopia's demise. It's pretty gruesomely violent though, and I found myself bored with the game before I finished it.
I've never bothered with Bioshock 2 because it looked like more of the same. Bioshock Infinite does look really good though. You should also look into System Shock and System Shock 2, which preceded Bioshock and are the source of a lot of inspiration, though they take place in a very different sci-fi world.

There are tons of athmospheric FPS games, you need to be more specific than that. Does it have to be a FPSRPG? Does it have to have a similiar setting/Bioshockesque art style? System Shock games are the most obvious choiches, but they have a very different setting (scifi) and they're sort of survival horror games.JC48573 wrote:looks very interesting. Singularity, Chronicles of Riddick and Metro 2033 are great atmosphere type FPS.
Bioshock series is my favorite out the ones mentioned.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is extremely atmospheric too. Medal Of Honor and Spec Ops The Line do a damn fine job as well.TEKTORO wrote:Singularity, Chronicles of Riddick and Metro 2033 are great atmosphere type FPS.

Jericho and Syndicate have a nice visual style too.

Oh man, I wish I could be more specific. Honestly, I really like what I "see" in Bioshock Infinite if that really helps. JT brings up a point where I may get bored with Bioshock 1, but I did play the demo and I thought it was alright...just alright. But Bioshock Infinite just feels like the FPS game I've been waiting for in a long time. I like the artistic direction of it and how it creates a sense of exploration. I really hate FPS games about war as they bore the hell out of me. Only played Counter Strike way back in the days and did very little with the current gen. I tried Killzone 2.....couldn't really get into it, so I returned the game.Menegrothx wrote:There are tons of athmospheric FPS games, you need to be more specific than that. Another FPS game I thought about "trying" was RAGE. The whole post apocalyptic intrigued me, but then I heard about technical issues and that turned me away.
I prefer the old school American art that they use in Bioshock Infinite. The first Bioshock games had that going on, but it wasn't as pronounced as it does in Infinite.
lol, Portal 2 is the only FPS game I own in my library as I love puzzles. Used to have Modern Warfare 1 and 2 and got rid of them.

I think I would have liked Bioshock a lot more if it wasn't hyped up so damn much. I thought it was a decent title, but it never lived up to all that acclaim it received. Two things that bugged me with Bioshock was that they had lots of cheap traps throughout the game. Open a door and get gunned down by a turret, that sort of thing. I also felt like some weapons were underpowered. Shotguns never hit enemies with the kind of impact and power that I expect a shotgun to have. I have a copy of Bioshock 2. I only played a little of it, and then stopped because like you said it did seem like more of the same.J T wrote:The original Bioshock is pretty good. I am a bit curious about Bioshock Infinite. I don't generally like shooters, but I tend to be more open to the ones of the Sci Fi variety, just because it's much easier to suspend my disbelief at the absurdity of characters getting repeatedly shot without any grave injuries. Your character in Bioshock for example was genetically modified, and the story even gave a reason for why you could respawn whenever enemies killed you. I liked that.
Again though, the hype train for Bioshock Infinite is really high. I'm skeptical that it will leave up to it, but it does look interesting. One thing I do enjoy with the Bioshock games are the rpg elements and various powers you have. I wouldn't mind trying the Borderlands game for those same reasons, but it seems those games are too heavily co op biased. I've heard several people point out that Borderlands 2 is very hard to play solo

I don't know that I'd called Chronicles of Riddick a shooter, though there are portions of the game where you do a lot of that. I think The Darkness, from the same developers, has plenty of atmosphere too. Starbreeze makes some interesting gamesTEKTORO wrote:Singularity, Chronicles of Riddick

Have you looked into Dishonored? It doesn't exactly go for a realistic aesthetic either. It's not exactly older American style art, but perhaps similar.
Other FPS/RPG games tend to have a good theme to them regardless. Deus Ex, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, and System Shock as mentioned.
You may also enjoy the modern Fallout games if you haven't played 'em. Fallout in general has a very Americana-ish motif to it that extends into the 3D versions.
If you just want a more themed FPS, maybe look at the No One Lives Forever series from the early 2000s. Fairly stylized 60s spy motif that's not Austin Powers off-the-wall, but still fairly light compared to most modern FPS titles (maybe comparable to something like Borderlands).
Rage, from what I've briefly played of it, is fine as long as you relax things to lower settings. At high settings the texture draw-in (without any potential fixes) is absolutely horrific on the PC.
Also, if it's a matter of having a hard time actually playing things in first-person, experiment with field of view adjustments, camera bob, and interface scaling if available. While I don't tend to get motion sickness from them either way, I've had some games that just felt "off" and I didn't enjoy until I adjusted things like that.

I really really hate Fallout. I really can't stand the ugly characters. Didn't like Deus Ex either.isiolia wrote:Have you looked into Dishonored? It doesn't exactly go for a realistic aesthetic either. It's not exactly older American style art, but perhaps similar.

Edit: Just saw dishonor, but I still prefer Bioshock's elegant style and subtle attention to detail.
