So I finally beat arcade mode in this, and I gotta say, the CPU wiped the floor with me pretty bad. I spent the first few days trying to play it like Street Fighter and not getting anywhere. I finally started paying attention to the combo system and eventually managed to pull off some reasonably nasty stuff, but Magneto still beat me like a redheaded stepchild.
Still, came up with a pretty cheap combo for Psylocke that I like. Ok, a really cheap combo, and it'll likely get me yelled at for pulling it out. Anybody else play Children of the Atom a lot? I have a few questions about it.

Seriously? My biggest complaint with the AI is that it just doesn't feel like changing the difficulty makes it any better or worse. I get crushed just as fast on easy as I do on hard, so I've been keeping it on hard. Sort of a Trial by Fire, you know?
Actually, I wanted to ask about the sound. Do sound effects fade in and out for anyone else? I was playing with a friend and he mentioned that it was normal for this game, but I want to make sure since I got my copy used. The music also seems to lag a bit at character selection.
Also, I read that there weren't any unlocks for the game. No bonus stages or secret characters that I get for beating it, though Akuma is in the game if I put in a secret code. And I heard that you could unlock Juggernaut only in the Japanese version, which I don't have. Anybody know?

I'm gonna have to play this some more -- I don't remember it being that difficult.
Although -- I need to broaden my skills with characters other than Wolverine

Omega Red is sooooooooooooooooo cheap in this game. He drives me nuts. And when you fight against a character with profectiles they just toss them off the whole fight. I've found the easiet way to win is to just use fierce punches and kicks and just kinda walk back and forth. If you use special moves the AI seems to know exactly how to counter it or jump in and really exploit your slow recovery time. The characters are really out of balance too. Still a fun game and it looks great even today.
Oh lets not talk about Akuma. I like how Capcom can slip street fighter into any of their games. But yeah Akuma is wayyyyyyy too extreme for me its like 5 hits and BAM I'm dead.ott0bot wrote:Omega Red is sooooooooooooooooo cheap in this game. He drives me nuts. I like how I complain about the difficulty yet I'm still itching to play it right now.
I think that makes it a good game. I want to play even though I'll get my butt kicked.
But yeah, played it on the hardest and then on the easiest settings, and I really don't see much difference in how the computer acts. Which means I shouldn't worry about difficulty I suppose. I will say, spending three hours to make it through arcade mode once definitely improved my game. I can make it past the first two fights without a continue now! Haha ouch.

I remember there being some issues with that game on the Saturn since it was Capcom's first port for the system and I don't think it fully uses the ram cart. It's the best version of the game though
You mentioned unlockables. Was I the only one who LOVED playing as Onslaught in Marvel vs Capcom on the Dreamcast? Best...unlockable...in a fighting game...ever! Ultimate power in your hands and you had to work hard to unlock it too. I also loved the original character mode in Darkstalkers 3 for the Playstation, which made up for the port's other deficiencies. You'd start off with a wimpy character with one health bar, but could eventually make your character god like. It added a nice rpg element to the game and was a good way to pump up a low tier character
I never played X-men: COA much, though I've never had too much trouble dealing with the computer in other Capcom fighters, though I do find it to be annoyingly cheap most of the time. I kind of liked the AI in Darkstalkers:Vampire Savior(or Darkstalkers III on the Playstation). On a high difficulty setting it's pretty smart and aggressive, but I don't recall it being too cheap. It could kick your ass legitimately. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who actually used to spend a lot of time in the single player aspect of these old fighters. None of my friends were into these games when I was younger, so it was mostly solo play for me, except for the few times I would actually head to a local arcade
