Hello, Forum of Racket Boy! I'm writing to you to ask about a ModChip for the Sega Saturn, if you could give me a few minutes of your time, please!
By what I've seen, when people have any sort of questions about the modchip, they all turn to "Racket Boy". Is he the designer and maker of the modchips? Or is he just the most experienced user?
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to buying one, but then I would be buying all the way from Spain, and before I do, I have some questions I would like to get answer to.
What is the difference between "segastyle.com" and "racketboy.com"? I noticed these two are the only places you can get a modchip from, with very little price difference. Both have tutorials on how to install them, and both of these tutorials show BLUE modchips, rather than the RED ones that you can see on those stores. What is the difference of colors supposed to mean? Does the install tutorial work anyway?
Also, as I said, I'm Spanish, and own a Model 1 Spanish PAL Saturn. I still don't know for certain if those modchips would work on my Saturn, what with it being PAL and all.... I've searched everywhere for reviews and found out that some people had problems with it, some didn't. For instance, I've seen people complain about their AR cartridges not working, and it would really be a shame for me to not be able to use my 4-in-1 cartridge.
So, to sum up, any advice you think I could need?
Thank you VERY much in advance!
Modding my PAL Saturn - Several Questions
Re: Modding my PAL Saturn - Several Questions
50/60hz switch is helpful. You'd want one to make NTSC games play at correct speed. Neither modchips or AR change that system setting.
A region mod has some uses. Mainly it allows backup RAM hungry imports to use the official direct saving cart (AR cannot save/load in-game).

No difference between the red and blue chips.
However, they will work in a model 2, not a model 1. There's serious work to do to make the chip work in a model 1. I would not recommend trying to put the racketboy chip in a model 1 saturn unless you're an expert at soldering. Even with 10 years of soldering experience myself, I still wouldn't want to attempt to modify one of these chips for a model 1, it's a very ugly process.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
