True!

Well I prefer the Gradius games personally, but it's not really fair for me to compare as I've only had limited time playing R-Type in arcades when I was younger, whereas now I've got several Gradius games (including the best in my opinion - Gaiden) on console. I have more time to form an opinion on Gradius.

But... I found R-Type extremely hard to "get into" whereas Gradius grabbed me instantly on the first play.

I've tried R-Types Final on PS2 and actually quite hated it, whereas the PS2 Gradius games were much more enjoyable.

The ship in Gradius looks cooler too, in my opinion!

But... (again) I'd really like to get one of the older R-Type games for console so I could give it a fair crack of the whip.

It's true, Gradius is more easily accessible. The R-Type series is an acquired taste, a taste for those who are masochists.

R-Type has better art.
Gradius has better gameplay.

R-Type Final is beautiful but level design is lame, less opportunity for exploration. Delta is cool and R-Type 3 is my favorite.

Gradius is kind of the opposite, Gradius V is the vest one of all.

Overall I'd say Gradius is more accessible and instantly fun but R-Type provides a more interesting atmosphere, some exploration, and unusual battle tactics. I'd say R-Type is more interesting in the long run.

Do you think R-Type has a higher sense of "kudos" about it? Perhaps because of the more difficult gameplay (real or percieved)?

R-Type Delta is an asshole. I'm not even sure why I keep that one. If anything I think of the first two R-Types as really kind of important historically. And like I said, I love the art. But I probably play Gradius games more because the power-up system is more interesting.
