My newest toy

Post by Curlypaul »

Due to space this is likely to be my last proper home console for a while and so far I'm pretty pleased with it. The only real contact I've had with the N64 is a couple of hours playing Tetris Worlds. It came with Goldeneye, and I bought Lylat Wars and Turok also. Turok seems to be the weakest although I only played it for a few minutes to make sure the memory card worked. Goldeneye and Lylat Wars are both excellent though. I remeber watching (yeah watching) my friend play Goldeneye and being pretty jealous that my satrun was dead on its arse.

I got it for £20 which is a bonus as well, the guy just listed it as 'N64, Controller boxed' with no gallery picture or mention in the description that its Ice blue, which, btw is very green looking.

The box is a little tatty and there's no manual or anything like that but I dont mind since a black console with Goldeneye will cost me £30.

Those N64 guides got published just in time for me and make pretty good reading guys ;)

I hope you enjoy your N64, it's my favourite console, although I havn't had mine set upfor a while since it uses an RF lead and the only TV I have with an RF input is my tiny 6" one. The funtastic series ones are really nice, but a complete copy of the original iMac that had come out at the same time. I like them though, especially the controller.

Is that a candy dish I see in your picture?

Ohhh...and have fun with the 64. one of the only systems I have no interest in buying yet enjoy a few titles here and there. Zelda games, Goldeneye and Mischief Makers were the only games I really liked on this system....and a occasional round of Mario Party. I think I just hate the controller so much I can't enjoy playing the games.

Its nice to have a rarer console as all my others are the standard editions, and with the matching controller and box I'm chuffed with it.

Some of the funtastic colours where a bit in your face I think, but this is nice and so is the purple and black one, although the black one seems much rarer than the rest of them.

This one only came with an RF lead so I have to keep stealing my little girls GC composite cable. I'll have to grab one for myself though

lol thats a bowl of pot pourri and I certainlly wouldnt eat that.

I've really never played one that much at all, but there are a good few games that interest me like M64, MK, WaveRace and most of Rares offerings, which are completely new territory to me.

I dont mind the controller although it is a bit weird having my left hand at an angle to the analog stick, which I guess is why they decided to house it within that octagon they got so stuck with, but it would have been better to angle it the same as my hands.

it's one of my least favorites. mainly because there are basically no rpgs on the system whatsoever. perfect dark is awesome though. i almost thought about picking up an n64 again, because i found a complete copy of perfect dark in a pawn shop for $4.

I bums me out that the x/y axis on the analog stick is made of plastic and no matter what you do it wears out. Back in the day I pillaged thrift stores pulled the little analog boxes out and swaped them in my good controllers. It's pretty easy, but once you pull a controller apart a few times it starts getting loose and making some annoying creeks. I'd try to find a generic controller for regular use and save your clear blue one the wear.

Never been intrested in hardcore RPGs like the FF series for example. But action RPGs like Zelda & Diablo II (I realise they arn't in the same catagory of RPG, but those are two I like) arn't so bad. As I wrote in the Best N64 Games for Today article, an N64 is an essential purchase if only to play through Ocarina of Time just once, but maybe thats my fanboyism showing through! Perfect Dark is amazing, got a cartridge for £1 which I was dead chuffed with!

As for the controller, it does take getting used to. I went back to my N64 after not playing it for a couple of years after the Gamecube came out and I couln't believe how big it is. Compared to the GC controller that thing is massive in you hands, you have to reach right up to get to the analogue stick. Still after about 10 mins it felt right in my hands again, and I was wall jumping in Mario 64 like a pro!!!
