Remember those? Not that it's been that long. Older members probably dont, but people who are 23 or younger most likely do.
I haven't been "following the scene" since 2005 so I don't know if they still make these, but I remember back then (2003-2006) you could download games for 4-5 euros to your cellphone and pretty much all of the popular games at the time like Splinter Cell and XIII had their own (2D) mobile versions. Magazines were also full of ads for ringtones and phone "wallpapers".
Oblivion
Splinter Cell
Thief Deadly shadows
I used to buy these games because I couldn't afford buying the real console versions. They were "free" since my mother paid the phone bill.
There are a lot of casual games on modern smartphones, but are there any poor man's versions of modern AAA games on them?

Too soon to call this retro?
I've got some old gaming mags from the early 00s and there really were a lot of those ringtone/logos/etc stuff for purchase. Completely and utterly for novelty sake - Just like 95% of apps nowadays.
Guess things haven't changed a bit.

Not saying it's retro, just wanna know if they still make these since I dont have a smartphone and I hardly ever use my cellphone these days. It would be intresting to try out some really bad and limited versions of modern games, kinda like playing the Game.com version of Resident Evil 2. It's always intresting when some one gets the licence to make a horrible port of a successful game (mobile games, R-zone and Game.com games....)

The only game that I can remember playing was Snake, the built-in game on my Sony Ericsson phone.

Didn't the N-Gage get some ports of popular titles?

Yes, it had Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, some Sonic game, an Elder Scrolls, King of Fighters, Tony Hawk Skating... et cetera.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Didn't the N-Gage get some ports of popular titles?
Some good stuff.
The N-Gage version of Call of Duty sucks, though. I've never made it more than 15 seconds into the first stage. That's one game that should stay on consoles... or at least systems with more than just a d-pad.
My first phone had Snake, Tetris, and Breakout (or "Brick Break"; whatever they wanted to call it).gtmtnbiker wrote:The only game that I can remember playing was Snake, the built-in game on my Sony Ericsson phone.
Monochrome screen, blurring visuals... Good times.

i believe the N-Gage sonic game is an original game.

Only mobile game I ever got into was snake as well, on my parent's b&w dot-matrix Nokia phone.

N gage was a legit game machine, more powerful than GBA, so it was in the different league compared to mobile games. The games were in physical format on cards rather than downloadable.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Didn't the N-Gage get some ports of popular titles?

I'm fairly certain it is just a (poor?) port of Sonic Advance. The NGPC one is an original game inspired by Sonic 2 I think.aaron wrote:i believe the N-Gage sonic game is an original game.
