Help with a Sega CD Model 1

Post by badcompany_25 »

I am having trouble getting my Sega CD to work properly. The system powers on just fine. The CD tray opens and I put a disc on it and it closes just fine. It starts to play the Sega Logo comes on the screen Sonic comes on a waves his finger and the Sega theme plays and everything and then.... Either the copyright screen comes on or the title screen depending on the game. It won't go anywhere past that. It's like the game freezes up or something. I've tried to get it to work with numerous discs but to no avail. Sometimes it works perfectly after some time of not playing it and then other times it messes up like this. I don't know what is causing this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

back in the day I remember calling the Sega hotline and they had me disconnect the SCD from the Genesis. Y'know the PCB in the Genny that you slide into the SCD? They told me to use a pencil eraser to clean it. I'm being serious. And it worked. Give it a shot? Shrug.

In response to Noiseredux I did just as you suggested and it still isn't working. I put in Snatcher and it still has the black screen (A trademark of Konami ie licensed by Sega) with the demo music playing in the background but no picture. If I press the reset button on the Genesis it won't reset. I have to turn it completely off.

I was also told to use the pink eraser trick from Sega America, and it did work at the time.

My Sega CD gets a lot of use and has a picture perfect resolution so here is what I suggest:

Unplug everything, disconnect everything.
Remove that silly aluminum plate that is in between the sega and sega cd.
Check all connections.
Reconnect everything.
Boot sega cd with no disc.

Does the sega cd freeze with no disc inserted?

Test with a music cd. If it freezes with a music cd, I think you are in for a rocky road.

Maybe wonky capacitors that are almost dead. Maybe a dirty lens.

The Sega CD doesn't freeze with no disc in there and it plays music cds just fine. It's just the picture when I try to boot a sega cd game up.

How do you clean the lens? I have already cleaned all of the cards really well in the system.

Get a q-tip damp (not dripping) with rubbing alcohol and lightly pull it across the lens. You don't want to push down, just barely drag it across a few times.

I did that it still isn't any better. I can't figure what to do still. I'm about ready to just throw it away. It's got me so frustrated!

I'd say it is an electronic problem, likely capacitors at this point then since audio CDs play and lens cleaning didn't work. If that is it, they can be fixed.
