PS1 D-Pad Solution? [UPDATE: I found one!]

Post by scarper »

There's a lot of PS1 shmups that I wanna play sometime, but that d-pad is terrible for games like that. It's hard to use, terribly uncomfortable, my thumb starts to blister: The usual complaints. It might be because I've spoiled myself with the Saturn controller. I tried looking for a Saturn to PS1 controller converter, but obtaining one is impractical at the moment. Very few of them exist, and they cost a lot.

Is there any good way to solve this problem, specifically for the purpose of playing shmups? Be it third party controller, other controllers.. Really, anything but its default D-Pad.

[1-25-13] I found one!

It's just about the craziest PS1 controller I have ever seen. The d-pad works pretty well. Not Saturn quality, but still way better than the default alternative. The structure of the controller itself is pretty damn solid. I also love the excessive amount of auto-fire switches. Picked up a brand new one for about $20 on eBay.

Been playing a lot of G-Darius with it. I was met with comfortable success.

These days I use my PS2 Arcana Heart stick but before that I used my trusty blue Toy Inc. controller. It's not great but I certainly prefer it to the four separate buttons

there's a green one on ebay right now:

you could hunt down the Saturn Ps2 controller, but that'd probably also be pricey.

There's always those Street Fighter Ps2 pads.

These shouldn't have any trouble working on a Ps1.
