That's why I think it is such a triumph in directing.

They weren't as afraid to take chances back then.

Chernobyl Diaries

They got the setting down, the film looks great and it does show some of the eerily beautiful vistas that Pripyat haves, they just forgot adding interesting characters, suspense and any sense of horror. It's so boring and predictable.
If you want something involving horror in Chernobyl then stick to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl and Call Of Pripyat (I'd recommend Clear Sky but it's a mess) or if you want a mutant horror film then stick to The Hills Have Eyes (The original and the Alexandre Aja remake).

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Another I hadn't planned to watch but did with a friend. An old review: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... start=1345

I have a real soft spot for this (and most) zombie films, so it is hard to be very objective in viewing it for the umpteenth time. I can report that my wife laughed at the right parts, and – now that she too is a PA resident – was able to appreciate the local flair in the film (e.g. the scene with the hunters). The film has aged pretty well, and the mix of action/cheese/guts/comedy is still second-to-few.
Grade: 4/5
well I'll be damned. We agree on something.

I really have a tough time deciding if I prefer Night or Dawn. They're both brilliant in diff ways. I think I'd *probably* give the edge to Night. But I love both. I also find Day really interesting and unique. I wish I could say that I enjoyed Land, but I hated Land so much that I didn't even bother seeing Diary.

Updated:

To do:
Maniac (original) - high cheese, very fun
Maniac (1981)
Sisters - interesting early De Palma film. Has some great scenes but a bit uneven overall
Vampyr - fascinating early vampire movie with compelling camera and effects work
Videodrome
Hasu
Cronos
Corridors of Blood
Roesmary's Baby - marvelously acted but quite plodding; an excellent payoff scene, though
Curse of the Demon
 - well acted and shot film that is marred only by some poorly aged special effects
Posession

Dagon
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Nightmare on Elm Street 2
Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Omen (2006)
Cabin in the Woods
Silent Hill 2
Obama's America 2016 - ridiculous fearmongering grounded in a moronic understanding of post-colonial scholarship and a near infinite number of logical fallacies

Also watched:
Dementia 13 - I have seen it before, but I recently watched it with a friend who quite enjoyed it.
Dawn of the Dead - a true classic that has aged very well

--
Hmmm, only 6 films in 13 days. Not a great start! I decided to take stuff I've already seen off my "to do" list and if I get to them, great. Even still, I have 15 films I am trying to get to before the month's out! Hopefully I can!

Edited: crossed off a couple more - now down to 13...

The Amityville Horror

As meh as I am on remakes, I do feel like this one was rather successful. Sure they played it safe and mostly just stuck to the original script. But they didn't really drop the ball either. It's shot well, and enjoyable. I don't have a whole lot to say about it other than that... though again I'll say it's too bad such energy was used to make a remake rather than a well executed sequel (this goes for many other horror remakes as well).

3/5

Ghostbusters 2

It dawned on me last night that I've probably seen this one even more than the first! I think if I had to really choose, I'd still the first is the better movie. But it's close. They're so different, but both great. I actually love the pink slime -- it's a neat idea y'know? Negatively charged matter. "mood slime"?

And of course this was hilarious:
