I want to pick up a 3DS, but I really don't play portables anymore. For me, its pretty embarrassing in public

You really shouldn't feel embarrassed just because you are playing a portable in public, it is a shame it's how you feel as it is limiting your options. I'm a bit curious on why you are embarrassed if you would like to share - do you notice people staring or something like that, or your friends give you flak for it?

My XL will mostly get played on my couch or in bed but I guess it is a good thing that I don't really care what other people think. It allows me to do whatever I feel like without the fear of embarrassment. I really don't see how playing a game in public is embarrassing though.

There's mixed opinions online of how the 3DS XL displays DS visuals. I know it retains the ratio, but I've heard there's still sort of a "washed out" look, especially with 2d games (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9112058). But then I hear the exact opposite, saying the visuals have cleared up compared to the original 3DS, and are basically the same as the DSi XL aside from the black bars which retain the ratio ( ).

The circle pad (and ability to play 3DS titles) justifies the price difference for me between the 3DS XL and it's last-gen counterpart, but not if the DS games don't appear as originally intended.

It's probably been discussed in this thread before, but would anyone care to re-clarify this for me? I'd love to hear some personal experience.

I think that playing DS games on my vanilla 3DS looks worse because of the expectations I have from using my 3DS.

I'm embarrassed to play 3Ds in public. I look so much nerdier than all the people tapping away on their iPhones.

If you have a steady girlfriend or wife them you shouldn't care.

I have an iPhone 5 but am still not afraid to pull out a portable gaming system. Heck, I still have yet to see anyone else using a Vita on a bus or train in Boston.
