Chronology of CD based consoles and add-ons.

Post by zilack_kid »

Okay, so I'm working on an article about the Sega CD and I was trying to find out what was the first/earliest CD based console/add-on. The list I've come up with so far is (from earliest to newest): TurboGrafx CD, Philips CDi, Sega CD, Panasonic 3DO, Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, and Atari Jaguar CD. If I've gotten the order wrong or missed anything please let me know.

Check the Amiga CDTV which is missing in your list.

Apparently the FM towns marty was the first 32-bit cd console (Japan only) and the Amiga CD32 was the first one of those released outside Japan. You may be interested in those.

Saturn preceded PlayStation. Also, since many PS2 games are on CD, you may as well include that in your list.
My games for sale: Racketboy, Amazon, eBay
My systems: NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube (Game Boy Player), Wii / Game & Watch: Ball, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP (x2), Nintendo DSi / Genesis (Sega CD, 32X), Saturn / Game Gear / PlayStation, PlayStation 2 / Xbox / Mac (Windows PC) / iPhone, iPad

Also add Neo geo CD. You could put ps2 on your list but add a note to it saying only the blue disc games.

Don't forget that the Sega CD was created in response to NEC's unit; not the SNES. :)

Pippin did have some real games though :P I almost feel like getting one just for the fact that there's a Bungie FPS game that's not Halo... on Apple Bandai Pippin of all consoles

As nifty as Super Marathon (much less a Pippin) would be as a curiosity...

No real need for a Pippin to play Marathon. It's readily available for free, legally, either in original form for the Mac (and Windows for Marathon 2 only), or via Aleph One to play the trilogy on OS X, Windows, or Linux.

Also been put on XBLA I believe.

Plus, even if it were a matter of playing the software, far as I've seen you can do that on the classic Mac OS. If you can even find a copy.

Again, the machine and such would be quite cool to have as a collector's item, but practically speaking (such as it is) I'm not sure there's actually a reason to pursue one.
