Re: Games Beaten 2012
Better story, better looking, better performing, better characters, better skill-building, better single player experience AND co-op experience, etc. etc. Everything is just leaps and bounds better, even if the basic idea of the game (post-apocalyptic FPS/RPG hybrid with a focus on guns) is the same. I'd have likely rated the first game in the "B-/B" range. This one is "A/A+" range.noiseredux wrote:what makes it so much better than the first?dsheinem wrote: Borderlands 2 is my GOTY so far, edging out even Journey to take the top spot. To put it another way, I played 15 or so hours of the first one over the years. Never felt compelled to finish it. I played 50+ hours in a few weeks with this one and still have little urge to play much of anything else right now.

Man, I had to go all the way back to August 8th to find my last update on this thread, my game playing certainly slowed down the past few months. At least I have a few additions now though:
Final Fantasy V was pretty good, I'd say my favourite old-school (pre-PS1) Final Fantasy I've played, although I've yet to try 2 or 6. It was far better than IV imo though, which I didn't enjoy much. The story was simpler and a less 'mature' but this lent it a charming air, and though the characters were hardly well-developed, I found them more likeable than IV aswell. This was partly aided by the 'bad' PS1 translation, which I found added plenty of humour, intentional or not (my favourite being that the characters shout 'YESSS!' whenever they win a battle).
The lack of characterisation didn't seem as much of a deal-breaker as in FFIV thanks mainly to this games lesser focus on the story, and greater focus on the battle mechanics - the job system is AWESOME. Being able to customise your characters to such degrees, and having the ability to support jobs with abilities from others rocked. I did however feel that physical jobs were a little unfairly limited in only being able to lend one ability at a time whilst magic jobs could lend their entire spellbooks, but it worked out ok. The game wasn't without flaws - after unlocking the last set of jobs I found the game felt slower to me, because there was less to look forward to, and this was compounded as the later abilities took hundreds of battles to master, as opposed to early on when you got them very quickly. The difficulty was fairly easy (especially as you got ridiculous job combos later on) but overall the whole experience was pretty enjoyable, and this rates as my third favourite of the numbered FF games I've played (IX > XII > V > III > I > IV).
Maniac Mansion I played for together retro, and posted some thought there. It was a good game, revolutionary for it's time, but quite dated feeling now. The multiple paths to beat the game were impressive, although it annoyed me that some characters were redundant (Bernard does what Jeff does and more, Syd and Razor do the same stuff). The puzzles were mostly logical, but a few were pretty mean and I had to use online hints a few times. There were also less ways to permanently screw yourself voer than most 80s adventures, but I still managed to encounter one and had to start again. The visuals were pretty nice for then time, but the lack of sound for the most part didn't sit too well with me. It's good, but one to play to see the history of the genre, not for the joy of it imo.
Day of the Tentacle however, was a fantastic improvement on the original. The tone is a bit different, with this one being a lot more quirky and silly than the original was. The 3 weirdos you play as (Bernard from the first game and his housemates Hoagie and Laverne) were really likeable, and their voice acting wasn't half bad, especially for the early 90s! There are still games now that could take a lesson from this games voice acting imo. The puzzles were silly but logical, and most were easy to figure out. A few near the end of the game were really hard though, so again I had to use hints. The games music is great, but some sound effects are a little loud and irritating sometimes. The graphics are very impressive, stylish and add just the right amount of bizarre and silly. The game manages to be pretty funny aswell, and I laughed out loud quite a few times. The lack of death and unwinnable situations was a godsend too. Everyone should go out and play this one if they haven't already, it's absolutely amazing.
Mega Man: Powered Up is a game I've been looking out for for a while now, and after finding it for a reasonable price recently, I have to say it exceeded my expectations. The main game offers 2 modes - a remade version of Mega Man 1 with Powered Up's chibi graphics, or a New, remixed mode with all new levels, 2 extra robot masters and new attacks. The new mode is far superior, building on the frankly rather average Mega Man 1 and making it great. The difficulty is spot on on Normal mode, but each stage can be played on Easy or Hard aswell if you find it too difficult or not challenging enough. What really impressed me about this game though, was the sheer amount of content. In addition to the two main modes and 3 difficulties, the game can be played through as up to 13 different characters, including all 8 robot masters (unlocked by beating them with the buster only, offering new challenges), Roll and Megaman 3 and 4 versions of MegaMan, with the slide and charge shot respectively. In addition, there's also 100 special challenges to complete, which are pretty tough and a full construction mode where you can build your own levels and share them online, kinda like Mega Man meets LittleBigPlanet. All the stages and characters are still available to download for free aswell, which is nice. The game's graphics won't appeal to everyone, and I prefer the old sprites, but they look nice enough and don't ever feel wrong, plus I prefer the super deformed look for MegaMan more than a more conventional 3D approach. The music is nice, but perhaps a little underwhelming compared to the chiptunes of old. Overall, this one is a fantastic game I'd recommend everyone pick up for the PSP - old school fun, with lots anf lots of content to keep you playing.]
For those who don't want to read my wall of text:
tl;dr: These 4 games were awesome.

Even though it's getting some pretty terrible reviews, I enjoyed it. It's not an amazing game, but it was fun and had some great moments. A lot of poor design choices made certain segments really frustrating, but a couple of the campaigns were very enjoyable.

You probably already answered this, but what do you consider "beaten" on this? All the Wizard Goals done or whatever they're called on Pinball Arcade?dsheinem wrote:Bride of Pin*Bot (from Pinball Arcade) - Vita
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Haven't been keeping a list this year.
Ren & Stimpy, Stimpy's Invention.
Well that was one of the easiest games I've ever played. Fun, simple, quick, but way too easy.
